Water based paint
 

I was at Florida Jets a few years back and a fellow pilot had a beautiful Mig painted with Sherwin Williams house paint and cleared. He said the paint was cheap and can be mixed to any color. He said he used a automotive clear over the SW paint and flattened it. I'm not a pro painter, so I'm looking to RCU for some help. Does any one know of this procedure or how to flatten clear?:)

If your using automotive clear the paint shops sell flattening agents;)

I have used flat latex exterior paint on many projects but I haven't used the SW brand, used the brand sold by Lowes. I have never used a clear over the latex because once it dries it is dead flat, very tough, can be wet sanded, is easy to repair, etc. In the photo below the grey colors are flat exterior latex. If you have any specific questions, I can try to answer them.

Nelson Hobbies and Warbird Colors sell a water based epoxy paint. I have not tried these paints yet.

This sport jet was painted with Valspar Exterior Satin without a clear coat. Had an old part so I did try some Varathane Crystal Clear WaterborneDiamond Wood Finishin Interior Satin out of a spray can over this paint after a light sand out to get rid of the ridges at the paint lines and it did add a little more shine.

As far as kero,after the latex isfully cured it is fuel proof to gas and nitro. That's why the warbird guys use it. I haven't tested it with kero because the turbine planes I've had were pre-painted arfs but I have used it on several gas powered warbirds no clear coat.

Never used Sherwin Williams but I used Benjamin Moore and the pigment content is high. Its pretty good stuff but you have to thin it out a bunch otherwise it sorts foams a bit without thinning. Which means a few coats are needed to get a nice uniform basecoat.

So I finish and prime the A/C like I'm going to use a solvent base paint and then use the Lowe's exterior or from what I'm getting, my favorite exterior house paint. I will give this a try. Thanks for all your inputs.

I have a BVM Bobcat XL that I am going to paint. Havent decieded on what paint to use, but thought about letex or water based paint. But I want to put a clear on mine. Can you use urethane clear over latex or other water based paint? What is a good water based paint?

Hi Guys,
I used the new Devoe paint called "Regency"-water based latex, with excellent results. I brought down a piece of Monokote and they matched it perfectly. I quart cost me $15.00 and it was very easy to spray and gave me outstanding results. I then over sprayed with shaker can flat clear, oil based paint and most pleased with the results. I'm unable to get Luster coat paint spray paint or bottled paint any more...so I went to the local paint store I've done business with for 25 years...and they fixed me what I needed.

Yes, you can spray oil based clear coat, gloss or flat over water based paint. I did and loved the result.

I'm sure an oil based clear will come up fine but it will yellow over time. Using a two pack or water based clear with the required flattening agent is the best I've found. Remember your jet can sit in the sun for days at an event and will deteriorate over time. Because of this I use the two pack clear. Bullet proof.

This is not a new method and has been around for a long time. Many articles have been published on this application just do a "Goggle" search.

Try this site. They have a 2 part water clear that is from the boat industry - Systems Three. They also have Monokote matching colors etc.
