Storage - hanging jets from the ceiling

I'm starting to run out of space for storing my jets and I was wondering if there is a system available that would allow you to safely hang up your fully assembled jets from the ceiling.

My idea is to keep all of my jets assembled (or at least most of them..... ) and in that way don't loose any time in assembly/disassembly processes. I don't want to put another shelf in my container and I was thinking that hanging from the ceiling would be a good alternative..... at least for my smaller and lighter jets. Anybody doing this ?

In the picture, you can see my actual setup. It needs some more order in order to fit a large hawk, a viperjet, a A-10, another Tucano, a marchetti, a large tutor and a comp arf corsair. I'm in the process of getting rid of all the small planes in order to have some more space available.

A company called Revoc (who mainly do wing bags) do a system that would work for you http://www.8fly.it/en/product.asp?Id=2171

Thanks for the link. That looks good.

I make straps and then hang the jet from the ceiling using those climbing clips which allow you to flip open the shackle.

It does involve two people to do the job and with some ropes and simple pulley's it could be rigged to be done by one. You can get pulley's and all the bits from most good hardware stores.

In the past I've done what Marc has used but managed to do it on my own by leaving the 'nose' loop attached to the ceiling, putting the nose of the fuse in and letting it take the weight and then just looping the rear around the back of the fuselage. It's a secure and cheap method.

Hey Gonzalo if you`ve got space how about another container joined together
and take out the center wall, that should do it.
Ive just moved house and ive no room at all until i build a bigger garage

Marc:

Thanks. That looks like a very simple solution. Just don't know if my ceiling is too high for doing that.

Harley:

Thanks. Cool system. Perfect fit to use with the Revoc straps.

Brian:

I have no more space available for expanding. I already joined two (2) 40' containers and don't have space to add a third one. That's why I'm looking at the alternative of hanging the models.

I've been also thinking about the possibility of putting the against the wall and support them in the area of the wing root. I don't know if this would create problems or not.

Hi Gonzalo
With 40ft to play with i would put a center rail from front to back and hang them down the center fully rigged
if you`ve got a helper to get them down.
I find it easier to mount them on the wall, the F22 is now mounted with the undercarriage against the wall
on bike racks two big "L" shaped brackets with pipe insulation on them, you just have to make sure
the fuel is drained out, this does not distort the fus in anyway.

You have a nice big hangar there its got me thinking

RE: Storage - hanging jets from the ceiling

I use Romex wrapped around the fuse/wings and hooks. The reasoning behind using Romex is it does the job very cost effectively and it is stiff. The stiffness allows you to guide the wires onto the hooks while you alone support the fuse with both hands. Sheathing cut back at hook location, or on some just 1 wire around fuse/wing.

All hang inverted, (dust accumulates only on bottom) gear retracted.

Takes a bit of practice, but not that big a challenge.

Oh, and doesn't look as pretty as straps. But I have around 12 models hanging off the ceiling. Do the math first, not after.

I just went to home depot and bought pulleys and rope. I wanted to be able to do it without a ladder. Kind of precarious to pull it up with two different ropes for front and back. I tried to do it other ways, balance just didn't work out. I want a bigger garage!

We are in the process of building our new club in here and we decided to install containers to be used as hangars and workshops. Several of us decided to join two (2) 40' containers in order to have some more space. The containers are located very near the runway so it is nice to have all your airplanes assembled.

I have recently made some display stands which are for Jetpower to hold jets I am showing, the position is adjustable from nose down to almost level - in nose down they take up about half the space of a jet on its wheels...... maybe thats an option?

You could add wheels too so it cold be moved around in a workspace easily too ;)

That's a great idea. I like them. Attaching wheels wouldn't be a problem.

Let me know if you have plans of selling them.

The only problem for me could be the cost of freight.... but definitely I would prefer this type of solution.

Everything is for sale ;)

The panels as you can see are lightened, things like threaded rod and knobs could easily be sourced at your end, as could the white plumbing pipe which acts to hide the threaded rods and provides the correct spacing so it would be just the MDF, ply or whatever other material you would choose.

Shipping to Chile could be a problem, not sure of the weight of one unit (just wood) but you would need a box 1100mm long x 600mm wide by say 150mm deep to fit three stands........

I use the bicycle hangers from Harbor Freight. Work nicely and are priced right! http://www.harborfreight.com/bicycle-lift-95803.html

You can also just use regular pulleys and rope; just make sure you buy quality pulleys so they roll smoothly. I will upload some pictures when RCU will cooperate http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../msn/72_72.gif

Those are the same bicycle hoists that I am using...I bought some of mine at Harbor freight, and some at the Dollar Store, where they were only about three bucks.
The hoists have two different mounting plates, and I like the ones that will mount to a 2 x 2 instead of the flat plate style like the ones from HF.

RE: Storage - hanging jets from the ceiling

Guys:

Thanks for the help. I now have some more clear ideas of what I want to do. All of you have provided some great info. I will need to post some pictures when I'm done with my remodeling.

Regarding the club.... I must say that we are lucky. We have around 250 acres that are shared by different disciplines.

We have two runways for airplanes. One is a little bit smaller than the one you have seen in the pictures but it has the same type of pits. They are in the process of pouring the asphalt for this runway. We aslo have two off road and one off road tracks, one place for flying helicopters, one place for flying gliders, one place for U-Control and a big lake for sailboats. We are still working on the facilities and hopefully by the end of the year we will have our club house ready. The terrace of the clubhouse is going to be over the lake so while having lunch we will be able to enjoy the view of some regattas.... who said heaven ?

I will post some additional pictures later so that you can keep drooling...... :D

if any of you guys have a plan of visiting Chile, you are more than welcome to come and visit us.

Hi;
If you are looking for a really cheap and space-saving method that doesn't involve a pulley system then I would recommend EZ-Hang. Each hanger is only $6.99 and it only takes two to hang your jet horizontal fully assembled. If you go to the website there are lots of pictures and some of them show the inventor hanging some of his large planes this way. Good luck with your storage problem.

RE: Storage - hanging jets from the ceiling

Hi;
Sorry to leave that out. It's

www.ez-hang.com

I have used several of them for my smaller planes but if I had the kind of ceiling you have I think I would try to use these to hang them up. I would also probably put pipe foam over them in addition to the covering they come with.

RE: Storage - hanging jets from the ceiling

Thanks Mel. Great solution......

Just wonder if even with pipe foam, the weight of a jet would be too much.

It could be a good solution for my RC Cars ;)

By the way, I remember that I found a similar product some time ago http://probuiltmodels.net/products.html I wrote to them several times but never got an answer.

Well..... next time you come down this way, make sure to stop in Santiago and we will host you in the club. Hopefully by that time, it will be more complete. We are in the process of getting the necessary permits to start the construction of the club house so in the meanwhile, we just barbecue near the pit area. Nothing in life is perfect... :D

Getting back to the subject, the obvious thing to use is the old victorian clothes rack. They are available on ebay and come complete with rope and pulleys.

On second thoughts it might not be a good idea as it may get taken over by the wife or you may get asked to dry the clothes.

After a rebranding exercise at work I picked up a bag full of unused identification lanyards. They have a 'dog lead' style snap on them, which I use to loop the lanyard back over itself and around the fuselage. Bigger planes require two or three lanyards in series. The planes are hung off of a pully attached to the ceiling and tied off on a cleat attached to the wall.
