Flight Metal and 2.4. Any problems?
 

I will shortly be building F-100 and really want to get it finished in Flight Metal but I'm a bit concerned with what effect the aluminium will have on the range of the Futaba 2.4 system. Has anyone experienced any problems and if so how did you sort them out?

I have not experienced any issues with my Futaba 2.4 rx's in a fuse completely covered in flite metal. My F104 is that way. The antennas are inside the fuse, not external.
If you look at flite metals website they have a button at the top about testing they did on 2.4. Tere used to be more info about it and I'm sure an email to Ed will eliminate any concerns.

Naturally you still want to do your normal range checks, etc....

I did not take the risk mounting internally. JR12X, I have the small antennas sticking out of small holes in the airplane or mounted in areas not covered with flight metal. No problems encountered

Never had a single radio problem with my Flight Metal plane and 2.4.

It took months to cover the tutor. There is a steep learning curve to the technique. I was taught by the master Joe Grice and have enclosed his airplane "pretty penny", the finest scale RC model I have ever seen. The way I approached it was every night I would try to get one or two panels done.[img][/img][img][/img]

Yup. I do. ;).
Pick a scheme that is in natural metal, but has the tough areas like nose and tail painted. :D

I know your asking about Futaba 2.4 but I have been flying my BVM F-100 for two seasons now on both a JR12X 2.4 and now I have a new DX18 2.4 system in it and i have had zero issues with both systems. If you want a little more security then all you have to do is place you receiver in a location where you can route the anttena tips thru some small holes in the bottom of the fuse. I'm also working on a second one that will be all FM and then painted in a camo scheme.

Technically there should be no problems with 2.4 and aluminum, however there are those that have reported having them. Im not using flight metal, but i do have a plan that was entirely thermal plated with aluminum. Since I am using a power-box anyway, i figured I might as well take the extra precaution for running a 2nd Futaba RX. I will run two antennas out in the tail area out bottom, and the other set inside the cockpit. Honestly, i do not expect to me seeing the power box switching receivers at all, but with a certain of time and $ into a project, and extra $150 receiver just wold not make sense not to have. In my case i was able to use 2x rx via s.bus into the powerbox SRS. With other brands, i would just use several of the remote receivers.

Since2011 my HUN has many sucess full flights with 2.4GhZ. Firstwith spectrum ans later with Fasst Futaba and last summer one and a halfflight with HoTT. Keep the antennas outside from the fuselage is essential.Different range tests showed that the 2.4GhZsystem with antennas inside froma Flite Metal body definitely not work.</p>

My Ziroli Panther is completely covered in Flight Metal. My JR 921 receiver with two satellites is all internal. I've had no problems out to 4000 feet or so.
