I have converted most of them to the Xicoy ecu and makes them even better. Clay Anyway... I just test ran the engine I bought... and it runs as easy, and as smooth as any of my other engines. BUT... it has the new ECU from Bob Price. (version R03B) It's an all new software package, and a few hardware changes within the ECU. I set it to all the suggested settings, other than the start gas... and it started without a hitch. On the start gas... I ran it up to 10. (that's 100%) The reason for that is... I use the regulated valve that Dreamworks sells... so I don't need the ECU to regulate the pressure. If there are any other guys running RAM's, and are thinking about having Bob upgrade your ECU... I'd suggest it. |
OK what does one need to change to convert to the Xicoy ECU?

On autostart engines you just need to install the new hall sensor (bought with Xicoy ECU) under the intake cover and discard the old one, on airstart engines, unless you are adding an electric starter and a spinner nut with a magnet, It may not be worth it, but can still be done...

I have helped convert a Ram 1000 to Xicoy ECU and as well as my own Sprite engines I currently have a Simjet 3000 With Kero start plug running Xicoy ECU and a gas start Xicoy on a Frank Turbine. Any turbine will run on a Xicoy unit with a little adjustment of the parameters. You need a magnet in the spinner nut (from Xicoy) and the hall effect pick up.

Am I correct to understand that given the original RAM1000 starter may not have been up to the mark then this would need replacing? If in the affirmative then wouldn't the front cover also need replacing? Just a few thoughts here. Thanks for the feedback.

From my understanding......
The original starters would die prematurely, because the ECU would hit it with full voltage. The newer ECU's have a soft start (slowly ramps up the power) so the starter isn't abused so badly. |
The slow startup was implemented when the more powerful speed300 motor replaced the original start motor on the 750P and 1000 to make a smoother,slower, consistent and controlable startup.t

Hi Guys,
Just a followup to all of this. Here is a test run of the engine with Bob's newest ECU. (R03B) It seems to run a RAM engine, as well as any modern engine/ECU combo. I ran it a total of 4 times on the stand... and each start was just as easy, and smooth as the last. FYI... this is on all the "Stock" settings from Bob. My only change was to set the start gas to 10, because I use straight propane, with a regulator valve. If you use powermax, you will probably set it to 6. R03B Upgrade for version C02C or newer is $125 and $175 for the real old ones. The older ones need some extra board wiring changes via land cuts and wire jumpers because we did a board update for C02C. The new R03B upgrade uses a new microprocessor plus some other IC changes and total new software. More diagnostic tests from main menu and more programmable parameters. New ECU $285. Thanks for posting the info Bob ! With as well as the new ECU works... and with the nice menu layout... I'm surprised that you haven't made a push to get your ECU's back out into the mainstream. |
Tony - thanks for your kind posts about my ecu. I have never advertised the ecu. I have done quite a few of the upgrades over the years and rely on word of mouth from satisfied customers.
