Just got a pic of the radio tray for my Ultra Lightning. Crazy bling! Mirrored plexiglass with my club logo etched in it. These boys are the best! Happy holidays.

On another note,although I hate to open this can of worms,it has been suggested to me that this type of plate may affect radio reception. There will be 2 Futaba Sbus rx's,into a powerbox cockpit srs,with 2 antennas on top of the plate,and 2 on the bottom. I would be interested in opinions from folks here with an engineering background,or other experience with the intricacies of signal propogation/reception,as to whether or not I should be concerned.

My gut says not to worry,other than a thorough range check. If this was a major issue,every airplane covered in flite metal,or chrome monokote,would be a smoking hole in the ground already. Thanks in advance,

Erik, you might want to contact Dave Shulman about the Rx's questions. He lost a plane with a similar install from what I remember.

I've been in touch with the Shulmans. There is no imperical evidence that the mirror caused the loss of control. I have done exhaustive research on the reflective/obstructive properties of various entities,and their effects on signal propagation/reception of 2.4g transmissions. The results are invariably inconclusive. The bottom line is that we are using 2 Rx's into a cockpit srs,which will pick the best reception,with antennas on both sides of the plate. If I'm taking a chance,it's definitely a measured one.

My response/question is,how many flite metal jets are flying around with no issue. Every expert I talk to brings the subject of metallic reflection/refraction. We need a real Jedi to tell us what's up. Truth is no one knows. Safe bet is don't do it. My buds spent serious time and money to make this for me. Thanks for caring. Happy Holidays.

Erik, Any thoughts on trying to get one or two of the antennas outside the fuse? I believe I saw somewhere in the Futaba literature about doing that for a full carbon fiber fuse.

my f-104 fuse was completely covered in flite metal and the single Futaba r6014 RX buried inside with the antennas inside. No reception issues. I also had a 1/5 scale mustang that I also covered compeletly in flite metal, RX inside as well, no trouble. My gut says you should be fine. Just range check thoroughly of course through 360 degrees while running, etc.

At least as far as 2.4. I built a ginat scale model, sheeted it with .0010 aluminum roof flashing and had no radio issues in the numerous flights we made. I used 2 Futaba 2.4 recievers, one in the wing with antennas extending outside of the wing skin and one receiver in the fuselage near the top with the antennas inside the canopy. Prior to flying the aircraft we did range testing at various distances and aircraft to transmitter orientations and experienced no problems. I also have a friend that has built several all aluminum aircraft and has not experienced any radio issues in the years he has been flying model aircraft with this type of construction.

Woj and company have way outdone themselves on this one.

I'll be very interested in what you find out regarding radio interference, or the lack of it, with this install.

Got a couple of planes that something similar would be fitting for.
