A Stingray is born

I drug my feet on this project long enough, so I finally decided to put the finishing touches on her. Built this one for a friend. He let me design the scheme, and trusted me when I said "I want LOTS of flake". The eagle heads were requested by the owner after seeing what Kenny did with my Starfire. I have enjoyed taking a break from painting for a while, so I let him do the last 2 planes. This thing is beautiful in the sun. All colors have color change properties. I like stuff that's different hence the paint being sucked into the turbine and the duel front wheels. Top and bottom are pretty drastically different and red and white are one of the best color combo's in my opinion. Power is the good old P60. Just figured I'd post something a little different for ya'll.

Nice to see these still being built, nice paint job and im sure it will be a pocket rocket with the P60.

One thing i noticed is one of your rudder control rods locates to the end of the servo horn and the other is closer in. if i was you id bring them both closer to the servo to get more torque as i don't think you'll need much movement on the rudders, anyway. Good luck.

The painter hooked the pushrods back up after doing some repair work to the rudders ( had some yellowing only on rudders). Will set everything back up when I have his radio in hand.

That is gorgeous. I'll bet it really looks good in bright sunlight.
Gives me incentive to start building mine. The kit has been sitting in my shop for 6 years now.

looks great.... I saw one of these fly years ago and it looked like it was going 600 mph due to it's size....lol... great work

Shaun Evans 03-15-2014 10:50 AM

Nice!

Yeah, I used much bigger horns on the rudders. So little throw is necessary and for its speed, the rudders are big (plus the geometry isn't ideal). The thing I like most about this jet is on a P-60, you can see the ridiculous acceleration when you go hammer down. Goes from MCAS to 199mph in three seconds!

edgeflyer 03-15-2014 08:18 PM

DS3711HV's on 2S lipo. Not a problem for these servos. These are the recommended horns also.

Brian,

Just thinking out loud. I know you know what you're doing. ;)

edgeflyer 03-16-2014 04:54 PM

What kind of speeds are these getting with P60?

mr_matt 03-17-2014 10:31 AM

Maybe a little over 200 in a dive. Some may claim more who knows. They look much much faster than they are going because of the size.

Kelly W 03-17-2014 10:43 AM

Hey Brian,

I can't speak for a P-60, but I had a PST 600R on my old stingray and I'd guess it was 180-200 if you get a good run at it. These things LOOK a lot faster than they are - due to size. They are also relatively slippery, so slowing them down on approach took some getting use to.

One thing I noticed on mine is that the plane is very susceptible to roll trim issues if you have poor centering servos on the elevons. One set I had would NEVER let me trim it to go straight and level. It always wandered one way, then one click at max resolution woudl make it wander to the other side, very uncomfortable to fly at a distance! I think those were Hitsc 5625's. I changed them for 5945's and it was instantly rock solid. Lesson learned, don't under-spec the elevon servos... Unfortunately a few flights after I finally got it flying well, I Roo hopped it on final and did a bunch of damage to my wings, fuse, and gear. She's a hangar queen for now and into the distant future.

Awesome paint job by the way, looks very cool...

Question, I know it’s not recommended, but has anyone ever put a P-70 on one of these?

Kelly

(PS: Doe' ! - sorry to repeat Matt's answer... he beat me to it! )

What's your wet weight on this with a p60

edgeflyer 03-18-2014 08:43 AM

I didn't weigh it, but would also like to know what others are weighing. What is the protocol for final? I have a feeling it will retain speed well, but being a delta do you bring it around slower that you normally would? I envision flat and level lower throttle half way around final turn, minimal throttle to fly it in. Any thoughts? Is the speed brake mod necessary or worth it for shorter fields?

mr_matt 03-18-2014 11:31 AM

Sorry I don't weigh planes much, don't see the point, I mean its not like I can make it lighter! I do remember calculating the wing loading on my F-4 once, I regret that decision!

You don't need the bottom speed brake, I do cant the rudders inward and it is quite effective if it is dead calm and you need a little extra drag.

edgeflyer 03-18-2014 11:50 AM

About how much rudder deflection in inches do you use. Is there much pitching when they deploy?

mr_matt 03-18-2014 12:18 PM

Hi Brian,

I can check tonight. Mine might be a bit different as I cut maybe 2.5 inches off the top of each fin, I thought they looked silly tall. I don't see much pitch change with speedbrake or canted rudders.

They key is not to stall it. It will flip backwards. It is not hard to fly but it is not a trainer either. It gets small.

edgeflyer 03-18-2014 02:30 PM

I will program the rudders to cant with landing flap only :p
