hey,

nice progress. Thanks for posting.

Can you go a bit into detail how you found the location of the hard points for the drop tanks and missile locations?

I have my HAWE landing gear back now. WIll post pictures later.

thanks!!

spaceman 01 01-15-2019 05:04 PM

Hello Tuggs, they had some dimples into the wing one was a little bit off but I figured it out by measurement and by trial and error with Dreiling with a very small dreiling bit .

I finished with the lights and all the details before painting I will not install yet that details because I’m waiting to find the drawing which I will do it at the bottom of the airplane and also on the vertical fe I finished with the lights and all the details before painting I will not install yet that details because I’m waiting to find the drawing which I will do at the bottom of the airplane and also on the vertical fin https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...a4603cfa2.jpeg

Guys this is what I wanna do with Mirage 2000, it’s one color scheme of the 25th anniversary of the Hellenic Air Force.
I am trying to locate somebody that can do this on thin vinyl. any information will help.
thank you, Nick.

jofunk 01-15-2019 08:00 PM

Hi Nick,

Is that particular image of St. Michael unique to the bottom of that jet or is it from a classic painting? Same question for the vertical stab.

spaceman 01 01-15-2019 08:12 PM

Yeah Joe, it is Αρχάγγελος Μιχαήλ /Michael and it is unique for that aircraft also they have Saint George which spearing a dragon but I like this one .

Just a suggestion, look into local artists, I've known people who have had graphics like that done by air brush artists at local a t-shirt shop. Some of these guys are scary good. Be advised you'll probably get some really funny looks when you carry the plane in.

I just completed the first stage of the painting to do the camo I used the 3M foam rope. I bought the box about six or seven years ago and it still works.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d0a5c1e03.jpeg

Now we are moving to the second stage which took me about two hours to complete one side of the top half of the airplane it’s the weathering. I just used a pencil and a gray or burgundy type abrasive pad, tried to enlarge the picture to see the difference from one side to another. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...a90939150.jpeghttps://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d86dca7cd.jpeg

Tuggs 01-22-2019 02:54 AM

hey, just a quick note on the weathering / detailing. Have you considered to use oil paints to highlight the detailing? the pencil detailing looks really nice but i guess you have to apply a clear coat afterwards to make it permanent?

spaceman 01 01-22-2019 04:36 AM

Yes Tuggs, I know but I still have to apply the decals and then I will do the clearcoat.
when you use the oil you must have a gloss finish and come out nice but since I'm using a matte finish it's very hard for me to work with it .
thank you Nick

Tuggs 01-22-2019 05:48 AM

Hey Nick,

From my experience, the best way to work it:

- Base coat & all paint job markings
- Oil paint weathering with linseed oil
- waterslide decals

I tested this on several models and it worked out great. Also there is no milky shine-through on the waterslides as the linseed oil is filling all micro-holes :)

However I never tried to apply a matte flat coat afterwards. I always found the finish with oil very realistic when it is rubbed down a bit with scotch pads

Cheers

T

Your build motivates me to continue my Mirage, but I am super lazy at the moment :(

JSF-TC 01-22-2019 06:11 AM

Beautiful.

What paint system are you using?

Paul

spaceman 01 01-22-2019 08:11 AM

Yes Tuggs.that I understand if you use a PPG paint or a professional spray gun I just use spray cans from the local hardware store rust oleum and for my military aircraft I like to have a doll finish different when you use it on a sports jet.

spaceman 01 01-22-2019 08:18 AM

Hello Paul as I mentioned before I use the rust oleum spray cans from Menards they work great and my final coat will be after the decals a picture safe clear finish coat.
Long time ago I used to use PPG paint and also Sharon Williams auto paint it always left an orange peel and it was very hard to get it very smooth this rust oleum spray cans do not believe this at all very smooth easy to send and also not spending thousands for the professional painting .

spaceman 01 02-10-2019 02:16 PM

Moving along with the built I got my art work done and installed it on the vertical fin also installing the decals before final coat .https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...290a12f6e.jpeghttps://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...7c89ca293.jpeg
