My Hysol 9462 is a bit 'clumpy'...Why ?
 

This is the second tube of Hysol 9462 that I have had in the last year where the white component comes out a bit 'clumpy', or a bit like oatmeal perhaps. The dates on both tubes are 2022, and they both came from D. Works.
Have not used them on anything critical yet, and they seem to still harden OK, but wondering why this is, and is the strength of it compromised ?

I’ve noticed that for years and have never seen a decline in performance.

I had one tube clump up this year. It won't go thru the nozzle. (It was used once before and it was just fine.) I just mixed it in a small container and used it. It hardened in the same amount of time and it did not fail. But at the time, I wondered the same things (e.g. what caused it to clump and was the strength compromised.) I ended up tossing the rest of it in that tube(s). Mine cam from the same supplier.

Yes, I noticed that it causes the white side to not want to go through the mix nozzles, which could cause to much of the other part to be dispensed vs. the white, not to mention defeating the purpose of being able to use the nozzles. Hmmmm....

Had the same problem. Actually broke my gun trying to hard. The glue is faulty. They must have had a manufacturing problem.
i called the supplier and received a replacement at no cost to me

Just heat it, the clumps will disappear.

It happens when it’s been stored too cold. Get a container of hot water. Like 60 degrees and put the cartridge in it for 2 mins

I had a lumpy tube and just heated it with a hairdryer when it jammed the nozzle. It flowed really nicely after a couple of minutes of warming.

Just put the pack into the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds and the white element will flow freely.

I wouldn’t recommend using it when it’s lumpy as it didn’t cure properly for me, probably due to an uneven mixture through the nozzle.

If you heat it to make it run freely, do you have to heat it again the next time you use it, even when stored at 18c?

Neil. Yours was almost certainly un even amounts due to part blockage. I’ve mixed enough with the particles and it has always set. If you store it warm it seems to stay creamy. I think these last batches have been stored cold after they were manufactured.

clumpy Hysol could also just be OLD .. When it gets old, its actually more "grainy" than clumpy, almost as if sand plebes were mixed into it. The cartridges do not usually have dates on them, however the squeeze tube Hysol typically has an expiration date listed on it, and its typically good for only 2 - 3 years for optimal performance. Great deals on hysol may just be old glue at a discount FWIW.... I usually get my stuff at mcmastercar.com , never had a problem.

‘Hysol have dates on the them....I get mine from McMastercar as well.....and recently the last 2 tubes had little clumb in it....they are well within the expiry dates...I mix them outside and the clumb disappeared I see no difference when cure...and they are in my finished basement/shop which has central air and heat....

So when it gets old and cold why does it get clunpy? I've seen this happen with other epoxy.

This some hysol I just used last night. It’s holding just as hard as it always has.

And yet, I don’t know why it can clump up?!

I’ve been using 9462 for 20 years. Even when past date, it has worked fine and was smooth. Every cartridge I have bought for the last 2+ years has been clumpy. I have a local friend that works for them. He has actually replaced a couple of my tubes with fresh tubes right from Loctite ( they are local to me) and the same clumps. He does not know the reasoning, but says not to worry as it will cure the same strength. If using mixing nozzles, I submerse tubes in hot water for 10-15 minutes and it smooths right out. If mixing on cardboard, I just hit with heat gun for a few seconds after mixing and it smooths out also.
Clumps or no clumps, still my favorite adhesive for critical areas!!
