In the mean time, what happened? Was there any video? Mike, I'm sorry you lost your plane.

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

Thanks I just got the jet to far out from me and could not tell what it was doing and the sky was dark and the jet turned black. I tryed to get it back to me ,but it just did not work out so, I had to shut down the turbine, and watch her go in. Then we look for two hours and then found her in a parking lot of a old shut down plant.

Crap, that's a bummer. I'm only 31, but my eyes just aren't as good as they used to be. I find that I'm more comfortable flying lower and closer than some pilots fly. I think the tango is a glorified stunt prop jet on turbine power. I plan on really exploring some tight close in high performance flying with it. I hope you got enough flights out of it to at least have been satisfied with the airplane.

Sounds like a big loss, did the turbine make it?

I know now that 3 Tangos have went down.

Mike Grant
I can make it 4 Tangos. After 20 or so successful flights, the nose gear decided to stay up when what I really wanted was down. So while cycling the gear and bobbing the nose in an effort to shake the gear loose, I managed to run low on airspeed. Todd's video shows the rest - snapped right, two spins, whump. All the innards lived, but the airframe was a total. I also got the bend in the tail cone, but that was the only engine damage.

One thing I both liked and hated about the Tango was the snap rolls it could do. Nice, sharp, hard ones when you wanted it, along with the occasional unwanted one to go with a lapse in judgement.

Gordon

P.S. Mike - The BobCat XL I bought from you is still going strong, and still the prettiest jet I own - thanks!

I am glad you like the Bobcat I think I will bulid a new Bobcat. The turbine was not hurt to bad I order parts and fixed it. I have test ran it and is running great now.

Gordon

Could you send me some picture of my Bobcat I sold you I never got to take a picture of It and save it,and I wish I had that T-750 back I can't get one now.So i think I will get just order a WM 54 SS 18 pounder for a new Bobcat.

Wings are primed now. I really wished the automotive paint place had the white fill primer but I settled for the gray. Looks like I may have this baby painted by the end of the week as long as the weather permits. So far the color scheam will be white nose fade to orange then to red and then blue at the back of the jet and I will flame the wings.

Edited for picture

Sweet!! You did a great job on the resurrection Dave [8D]

Mike,

It'll be the end of the year before you can get your hands on the new Wren Supersport 18 LB-thats the target frame I heard for introduction.I would love to have one myself for my YA F18 single, but I dont want to wait till the end of the year to get it done so I am gonna just slap a Wren54 in it .I will send it off to JD Ent. for some tweaking to get a little more out of it .

Dave, did you tear the monokote off and glass the wings?

BirdofpraY 01-11-2004 04:44 PM

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

Sean, I ripped the monokote off and glass the wings and the horizontal stabilizer and all control surfaces.

My tango is still in weighable condition so if you want I can weigh my peices and give you an idea of where you are at. I can weigh to the tenth of an ounce.

Sean

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

Sean yea please weigh you Tango, that would be great. What will be in the air frame when you weigh it? I will weigh mine just before I paint and after I paint, as I am going to be using a 14 lb range turbine I am weight cautious. You like my AFP (Advanced Fabercation proccess) ;) glassed and primed in 1 day, one day I will have to post this proccess. Can you weight a wing for me?

seanreit 01-11-2004 06:59 PM

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

Right wing with aileron and flap installed using aeropoxy on hinges is 11.4 ounces.

BirdofpraY 01-11-2004 07:13 PM

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

Sean, my right wing weighed right at 13 oz but thats with out hinges, still needs wet sanding so I can drop alittle more weight.

BirdofpraY 01-11-2004 07:15 PM

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

my booms will weigh alittle more because I filled this with expandable foam...

seanreit 01-11-2004 07:29 PM

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

I think that's acceptable considering I just tried reproducing a popular arf wing recently that was built up and monokoted. I built it with foam and glassed the foam directly. The original wing was like 5.8 ounces and the new wing before glassing was 3.8 ounces. But after i glassed it it came out at 5.8 or 6 ounces before primer and paint! I threw it away as that's an abortion considering the full flying weight of this particular arf was 4.5 to 5 pounds. Can't beat monokote for weight, but your rebuild job to primer was only 1.5 ounces. That is awesome!!

FYI, I just weight the fuse it came out at 2lb 15.7 ounces. That's including the speed brake installed with servo and control rod. Also includes gear door nose cut out and hinged for gear door. Nothing else is installed or done on the fuse.
Sean

RE: Bringing back the Tango...

Sean, My fuse weighed right at 2lbs 2oz that is just the fuse no nose gear foarmers and no speed brake, and no Inlets.

Well amost fully primed just need to finish the booms and wet sand the entire jet. Todd do you still have the original formers, I would like to use them as templets to build new ones? The one boom that was broken in two, I glassed backe together with 6 oz glass from the inside and used expandable foam to press the glass from the inside to the inside boom walls. On the out side I used 6 oz glass around the boom and sanded and filled, came out really good just need to finish them now.
