Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Did he lose interest? Was he going AFS or all-composite with it?
|
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Come to Florida Jets!
|
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
OOOH! OOOH! Take lots of pictures!
|
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Ahhhh David.....I didn't need to know that[sm=sunsmiley.gif]

RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
I didn't say a thing....just an advertisement for Florida Jets!
|
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
O.K.
I'll be there!:D D.W. |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Here's another clue: BV's new price sheets clearly indicate F-86F 60" at the top of the sheet. Why would he make 60" so prominent if he wasn't about to release the bigger one?
|
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Could it be maybe like Patel's
|
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
No.. not that big. It's something like 78" span or so.
|
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
supposed to just under 80", 84 with the wing extensions.

Here it is. The picture does not do it justice, sitting here under the canopy. The detail and craftsmanship is AWESOME. Painted black before metal cote is applied.

RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Thank, John!
What construction method did he pick for the wings? Is he going AFS with this one or all-composite? Does it appear appropriate for P120 to P160 size engines, or is it more like P160 to P200? Is there anything else interesting or unique about the kit? |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Some things I "heard"
The wing is completely built up construction (no foam). Apparently a foam wing gets points taken off in competition (Top Gun?). The airplane will slow down to a crawl for landing and "could" be a better landing airplane than the kingcat. Based on what I saw, a 120 could get it flying, but having just flown a 160 for the first time this weekend, I'm liking more thrust. It's clearly BV quality at it's best. Everyone was totally impressed. Simply awesome. The spars were all Composite everywhere. Very cool! Sean |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Tony Massiello and I got on the list for 2 at the event.

RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
That is sweettt!! Is there a projected price yet for it? Is the sliding canopy standard on it?
Steve |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
I overheard a conversation saying the price was not yet finalized, but they were thinking along $3,300.
Don't ask me any more detail.. as mentioned I overhead it in the BVM booth. I was big! Regards, Edgar |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Bob told me the sliding canopy will be included. Most likely servo driven.
Given the track record of BVM products, this will no doubt be the finest F-86 ever made, and easy to build as well. |

John
I think this is gonna be another gem of a jet in BV 's line!! I always felt that his current 60" F86 was too small personally so this will be an awesome addition !! I Love the sliding canopy. If its 3300.00 thats not bad for that big of a jet.I would imagine it'll be A.F.S as well with gear included?but an all built up wing-errr?I wonder why hes not going all composite with it? Are they giving a timeline yet as to when it will be available? Steve |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
I was lucky enough to see the wing before the bottom sheeting went on.....much like the Balsa Bandit and BobCat, but obviously more complex.....Fowler Flaps.....very sturdy Carbon fiber gear mounts and spars....lots of plywood.....big fat gear like the KingCat....should be fully grass field capable like the KC.....
I think BV is trying to keep costs down by not going fully composite like the F-100......doing the compo F-100 wing is very labor intensive for BV's shop..... For those not interested in doing the built-up wing themselves, at least one Pro-Builder is thinking about doing custom wing build-ups only....... TA |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Well that's both good and bad news to me. I'm glad he's at least trying to keep costs down, as I think this could be a very popular kit. The technical challenge of assembling another built-up wing isn't something that by itself would deter me. But unfortunately, I've developed an allergy to balsa dust that makes built-up structures a problem for me.
The last built-up kit I assembled was about 5 years ago, and I found that I had to use a paint respirator whenever I was involved in any sanding operations. I also find $3300 tough to swallow if that's just the cost of the kit, especially if it has a built-up wing. $3300 makes more sense if it's the "Go Fly Price" that includes landing gear, struts, wheels, brakes, & fuel tanks. |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Tom
I surely understand BV's way of thinking on the F86.However most guys will be inclined to spend the additional money to get a composite wing.I personally dont have a problem building "all in all" as I have built 2 YA jets & 1 TGA jet to date.Buttt I have a Bobcat XL I just bought back in dec. that was already prebuilt & glassed luckily .I would never conceive trying to tackle a builtup wing like that!! I read the BC XL manual & I was totally stumped with the wing building segment.Thank god my BC was already built!! I think I am gonna stick to either AFS kits or ARF's for now on as my time to build & prep, etc .is very limited.I just want to get a new jet -pop in a former or two then drop my equipment/turbine in & hit it!! :D Steve |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
The built up wing is a simple build job, the Bobcat wing was almost a shake the box and put it together. All the laser cut parts fit extremely well so it is like putting together a jig saw puzzle.
The reasoning behind the built up wing is two fold. Less expensive to produce, and it eliminates the 2% deduction at Top Gun. I saw the wing before it was sheeted and while it is a high parts count it will build fairly rapidly. THe fuselage is not painted black but molded in black for a good start on the metalkote process. |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Im curious, will there be a deduction with it not having slats?
Scott |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Scott,
The version he did does not have slats. |
RE: Whatever happened to BV's big Sabre project?
Awesome,
those are a pain. Scott |
