Would we experience compressor stall or wing compressibility at the speed of sound? Isn’t the speed of sound a sea level only around 635 MPH?

all the comments about world records are a little silly, because of the fact ,who,s the official group to say where,when,how,what,etc. It could be the fai,ama,faa,cia,bbc,abc,nbc,cbs,etc. wonder if guiness has a catagory for r/c speed records.

I still would like to know who says who has world record. I seem to think there is no one group that can say THIS is the record.The disscusion could go on forever. one time in mojave during some secret test stuff, I flew a full scale 727 by radio control ,voice control to be specific. would that count?

Like michpittsman mentioned in his post, almost all, if not all aviation records are sanctioned by the FAI. You must meet FAI specifications for the aircraft and follow their procedures. All of the AMA records work through the FAI. I saw a picture of an SR-71 with a large white X painted under it. The caption noted that the mark was so the speed run could be monitored by the FAI.

thnx, but my point still is who gives the fai or any group the [almighty, none higher than us] rights to say who has a record.example [my group does not recognize the fai as a governing body for world records] .the only way you can say it is there is an [fai world record],[gwbr world record],[wxyz world record],etc.. but i guess if the majority of people on earth think the fai is the only group that can say who holds a record then so be it.

Under ordinary conditions, michpittsman would have been correct. The FAI (Federation Aeronautique Internationale or World Air Sports Federation/www.fai.org) is the only officially and internationally recognized institution which certifies world records in air sports.
As you can see on its webpage http://records.fai.org/models , it certifies records for all types of models in all types of modalities availabel - EXEPT FOR R/C JETS. (See my article of May 15 on this thread)

And due to this circumstance, the FAI (paradoxically, I would say) is completely irrelevant when it comes to model aircraft speed records. Or in other words, the FAI is trying to make sure that a model aircraft world speed record CANNOT exist.

This circumstance must be due to the fact that the AMA - by being a member of the FAA - is the largest and therefore most powerfull model aircraft association in the FAI, and that the FAI therefore caters to its wishes. And what the AMA EC thinks about speed records by jets is sufficiently known on this forum.

And as far as the Guinness Book of Records is concerned, they orient themselves on whatever national or international organizations involved in the record categories which Guinness puplishes might exist - in this case the FAI. This is the reason why the Guinnes Book has stopped as well to publish model aircraft world speed records (I think the last one that made it into the book was the one of the BVM Bandit, but all indicates that since then the 300mph or even the 350mph barrier has been broken).

As a result, the virtual prohibition of a model aircraft world speed record leads to never ending discussions on this and other R/C jet forums worldwide.

Some info I just found:

Current turbine speed record (not FAI or AMA or whatever certified) is held by Enrique Broens, of Curitiba, PR, Brazil, using a modified Super Hot Spot. 678 km/h, about 425 mph.

I have/had one of those, but when I found I the the wing tanks leaked like a SR-71, I reverted to a Dubb Jett and a prop.

World Records in any type of aviation, including modeling, are usually attained under the strict guidlines of the FAI (Federation Aeronautique Internationale)
Under FAI rules any model competing for a "world record" can weigh no more than 5 kilos (11.023 lbs) full of fuel.

I once saw a video of Jet Power meeting in Germany. A guy had a Lavi with a turbine that had afterburner(Home Made!!!). You need to see it to believe it. It was really fast. How fast??? I don't know, but too fast for having a confortable flight...:D AT least for me...[8D]
