Weekend

Hey guys the weekend is here, time to go flying.

I suggest that we give RAM and the guys the weekend to relax and forget about it and we all go flying.

Thats were I'm going.

Those who agree stop posting, those who don't......well..... :stupid:

Bye :D

batteries need 2 more hours before they are peaked... what do I do?

C_Watkins 07-27-2002 08:15 AM

Paperairplanes has the right idea...

I think too many people buy into this very expensive part of the hobby thinking,
"Costing this much, I should have flawless performance and/or perfect service forever".

If/when I ever decide to drop that many bucks to go turbine, (which is doubtful)
I think I will aproach it much the same as high performance auto racing engines...
for which there is no warranty whatsoever, and those who buy/build them
are fully aware of that fact, and spend their thousands anyway.

Sure, it's a chunk of money... but these are toys! You gotta PAY to PLAY!

Personally, I think if the miniature turbines had been marketed that
way from the start (provide service & parts at fair prices, but no "warranty"),
the profit margins would be higher for the manufacturers, and the turbine fanatics
would still buy them. I imagine the addiction is strong, for those with the cash ;)

With such a structure, just as in the racing world, some brands would
stand head and shoulders above the rest, and those brands would flourish.
The brands that had lots of "problem engines" would slowly dissapear. (Or get better)
I feel positive that RAM won't be the last casualty in this business,
unless something happens along the way to make the whole thing
a lot less expensive on the manufacturers. The bad part for RAM, being
at the forefront of the technology was, they bore the lion's share of expenses
with regard to R&D, and all the "hit or miss" expenditures involved therein.
(Not that other companies won't spend as much or more, but it is more likely
that they will be able to spend those dollars in areas of enhancements,
rather than re-inventing the wheel, so to speak.)

Oh well... random 5am thoughts from an outsider... take 'em for what they're worth.

Free from a Scotsman....Never.....As an ex-scotsman, I know we never give things away free. It took me several years of living in England to get over it.... :D

Never trust a Scotsman with money, especially those who come from places you can't pronounce...... :D

Chris,

The next time you see a toy, that runs@ 150kRPM and hits 175 mph plus, take some photos and send them to me, please! :)

You may get away with calling it a model engine, but if you called
TJT/Jetcat and told the sales person on the phone, you wanted to by a toy turbine, he most likely would send you to walmart! :)

It's all relative.

Ok... they're *adult* toys.

No wait... that doesn't sound right either.
(Matter of fact, it's painful to even contemplate.)

Bah... gotta go watch an SPA contest in a bit.
Later :)

Show me an adult toy that will do 175,000 RPM.

And I think Jockjet should send me a bottle of Famous Grouse as an apology. It's cheap stuff, but you can't get it here.

If you own a turbine, just go over and take a look at it.
It's not a "need", and if you're not making money with it, I'd
place that into the "toy" category. A dangerous and expensive
toy, but a toy, nonetheless. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

For others, it's Bass boats, or racecars, or whatever...
they're all just expensive toys, as far as I'm concerned ;)
Heck, you can't take it with you... and they say that,
"He who dies with the most toys, WINS!". More power to ya.

I think you missed the joke! "Adult toy", like pink plastic ones, doing 175,000 RPMs...
Hey, any joke you have to explain must be a BAD one.

Anyway...YES, I have a turbine, and YES, it is a TOY. Like you said, all models are. I don't take them too seriously.

Are you an SPA guy? I am a VRCS guy. Working on a real SPA type right now. Though I am a lousy pattern pilot, and can't compete on the flying side, mine will certainly be the most AUTHENTIC entry. It's a Vic's Custom Models Phantom, with a 1967 OS Digitron four channel propo radio, and an OS Goldhead 60. All fittings and materials will be genuine NOS stuff, all pre-1967.
It's all good...indoor, jets, escapements, I love them all.

Looks like the great RAM storm o' controversy has blown over.

"I suggest that we give RAM and the guys the weekend to relax and forget about it and we all go flying. "

Amen, happyjet.

Better steer clear of jockjet for a bit, he's still seething from my brilliant but deleted post on Edinbrough, which you missed. Watch out, those Scotsmen(I am one, too) hold grudges for hundreds of years!

C_Watkins 07-27-2002 02:57 PM

Trust me...

Yeah, you left it wide open for some good ones :)
I used great constraint in specifically ignoring the opportunity :D

(Don't wanna get banned just yet)

As for SPA, no, not yet, but soon.
I will probably enter the next event, in the novice class.

I've always been a bank & yank guy, no real "form". It's time
to start showing a bit of finesse out there, sometimes, I guess.

I gotta learn some, first :)

SPA is logical for me, I suppose... seems that one of the locals
came up with that class, and there's lots of em about the field.
Hopefully I'll end up with lots of help and coaching.

I WISH I had used that restraint!

Like you, I'm not much for finesse. The idea of doing the same maneuver over and over again, till I actually get it RIGHT, does nothing for me. Competition does nothing for me, either.
But the SPA movement is great. Much more interesting than all the 3D stuff, and much more affordable and accessable than modern pattern.
Give it a shot! I don't think you need to be really "committed" to do it.
I just like putting together the vintage planes, finding all the stuff and making it work.

paperairplane; When I walk into my shop and look at my newly finished Yellow Twin F18 the hairs on my arms still stand up. After all this mess I am glad I still have the passion I Had at age nine. This is a great hobby. hope you keep on enjoying your's. I will some day meet you at the flying field. Looking forward to once again spending time with the true modelers like you.
Regards;

Albert (rambat)

Easytiger; Many times when Rei and I were frustrated at the shop and could not get an engine to stop vibrating, I would always yell him we needed to start machining some real "Adult toys"
With our luck those would run smoothly.

Alright, PEACE, Albert. We are both modellers, and that's the most important thing of all. What's done is done, said is said, I can understand your frustrations at coming to the decision you did. Been there, done that. When I closed a company eight years ago, I thought I would never be able to show my face in public again, I thought that was IT and I was done in the business I am in.
But that's not how it worked out, the new company was and still is bigger and better than the first, and I did quite a lot differently the second time.

Anyway...I will leave you with a final thought, told to me by AMA Hall of Famer, loudmouth, and all around general great guy, Joe Beshar:
"Did you ever notice that whenever you see a picture of somebody holding a model airplane, they are ALWAYS smiling?"
All the best,
Curtis

never let your ex hold your model airplane, or anything else for that matter...

I'm back

Hey I thought we were all going flying today......?

Glad to see everybody has eased up on old Jockjets, guy must be sick of this by now....

Just out of interest, I got 20 litres of Jet A1 today for 45p / litre. What do the great hydrocarbon burning american public get to buy it for ? 45p is equal to 65 cents I guess.

If it's dirt cheap just lie to make me feel better.....

Gonna try and burn atleast half of it tomorrow. :D

Mark.

It's raining, so I'm inside building.

Pay for fuel? This is AMERICA, baby, land of the plenty. I just stand out on top of the runway numbers at Kennedy, hold out a bucket, and wait for some inbound 747 to dump some fuel before landing.

Sh_it the field I was at today: All 400 feet, trees to the right, a tall hill to the left, a double set of 350,000 volt lines from Niagara Mohawk on the front. Ha, but it was fun. Got to try the smoke system on the ground. Standing ovation for that. Good time. It was HOT and HUMID. I had my generator in the car and a 20" box fan so I set up shop in front of it. Got a whole bunch of "you wimp" kidding but in the end they were fighting for a spot in front of that fan :D Im tired

I believe this thread has run it course and the most recent posts off topic reflect that so I'm closing it.

Thanks and nobody crash please :)
