My 44 has arrived! now.....how do I determin where to install the turbine? how far back/forward?

Hi Dave, congrats on the Wren44. You said full auto start in previous posts,I have one but it is just on board starter. Gas and starting battery are external and plugged in only when starting. If you have a weight problem better loose the full autostart.Keep the mounted starter motor as it's only 3 oz. and will simplify starting somewhat. My turbine ended up on the same mounts as previous fan shroud. I just had to extend them because the turb. is smaller diameter. The jetpipe is mounted 3/4" behind the turbine exhaust to a bulkhead that was behind the fan unit. This was determined by doing some trial and error with the plane assembled and moving equipment around. I don"t want to add any nose weight so I had to move the turbine forward from my first location. The problem I'm having with the A-4 is the builder put a fixed canopy on. I have no access to front fuse for equipment install except nosewheel retract opening. Looks like i'm going to have to cut into this lovely paint job and make a canopy/hatch. Looks like the all up weight with fuel will be 9.5 LBS. Not bad. The airframe was built light and I'm using high torque minis for control. I ran this all by Larry Wolf of JHH and he said go for it. I wanted the autostart version, so if weight has to be lost, I'll loose it in other places :)
Est. AUW comes to 11lbs, which still should not be a problem. I believe Larry's F-86 weighs 12.6lbs AUW and still flies very. very well with the mw44. I luckily have the bay under the canopy to move things around in, and like the L39's, may install the nicads in the nose wheel bay. We'll see. I suppose I'll just have to do the trial and error method too. Keep in touch Dave (any pics of your A4 installations?) |
