Well, I've got my hawk, and there is a little fuel in the tank, a 1700mah nicad in the nose, and it needs a receiver and 2 servos........but my worry is that at present it weighs 9.3lbs
I have to fly this thing off grass! any suggestions?

This is rediculous. Back to the original questions.
Does anyone have any PJP/JHH Hawk videos of it on .46 DF power?
Does anyone know where the CBM F-16 flight video is?
Also, Ducted fan Smoke? any way to get a smoke system working on Ducted fan?

RCJI did a review of the PJP Hawk with Throjet power a number of years ago. Recently, they did a review of the JHH BAE Hawk with K&B .48 power. Both seem to be great flyers. The problem these days is getting an engine/fan unit.
RCJI also did a series on getting smoke from a DF. I think Martin Lefebre (SP?) from Canada did the article. The system consists of a smoke pump (Simple Smoke pump from Tejera Systems in Florida), soft copper tubing wrapped around the header pipe and injected to the pipe via a modified pressure tap (seal it off and cut a slit with a dremel cut-off wheel, the slit facing the exit). The other trick is to get a good smoke oil (Super-Dry Aviation smoke). Not sure how much smoke you will get out of a .46. No problem with a .91 DF generating enough heat.
Get back issues from RCJI (www.traplet.com). Good luck.

Great , thanks for the info. I saw the recent JHH review in RCJI, but have not seen the PJP review. I've laready got the hawk with 46VX and thorjet fan. As you mention heat may be a problem. I'm also considering the extra weight of a smoke system. This is a 46 sized jet that will be taking off from a grass strip, so i may need to save all the weight i can.
I've seen smoke cartridges for RC/ aero which could be placed in the tail pipe. once lit, they're on. Is there anyway that these could be ignited inflight? i think a smoke cartridge would be lighter and less hassle than a smoke system, and I'd be guarenteed smoke.
anymore help, pics, etc of smoke cartridges would be much appreciated. Is there anywhere in the UK that sell these Smoke cartridges?

Please can someone post a little servo advice.
I'm going to stick to this with 46VX DF power.
Please can I ask what servos people would advise for this model. Its a PJP Hawk, slightly smalled than the JHH hawk. weighs approx 8lbs (according to www.pjpjets.co.uk )
please advise on wing, elev and rudder servos.
Thanks
Dave

Dave,
With all of the choices these days, your servo selection will vary depending on how you build the model and what will fit. People have been flying .45 sized ducted fans for many years on standard servos (Futaba 148 for example). I would use good coreless servos for the main flight surfaces. The manufacturor should recommend a minimum torque for the servos.

Thanks. It has Hitec HS81MG in the wings, I was planning to go for standards on everything else except the Elevator, on which i'll use a standard coreless with MG.
Thanks for your advice.

How much thrust will a Thorjet45 (7blade) with OS46VX and JMP Pipe on 10% fuel give?

The model is now all kitted up and ready to fly. I've installed a 20oz fuel tank.
AUW will be 11.1lbs (ouch?)
I'm using the OS46VX with Thorjet 45 7blade fan unit, with JMP Pipe. Can anyone offer any thrust specs with this combo?
Am I looking at a well/averagely well/poorly powered model.
Also, if anyone can explain what good power to weight ratios are, i would appreciate it.
Cheers
Dave

I don't have any experience with the Thorjet fan unit, however the VX on 30% nitro will make ample power to yank a 10 LB. plane off grass with no problem.

Power to weight for ducted fans was always to try and get as close to 1:1 as possible... less meant loss of performance in some manoeuvres especially the vertical. Having said that, I've seen Avonds Eagles weighing 15/16lbs leap off the deck with an OS91/Ramtec pumping out 12lbs static. How long's your strip Dave?
Just one small observation.... your photo shows the models sitting a bit "nose down", that won't help rotation
Cheers

Our strip is probably 200/300meters. Yes I have also noticed the "nose down" attitude; will probably put a larger nose wheel on, this will also help it get up to speed.
I was planning to use formula irvine 10%......
what do you think?

I usually run my OS91's on an 80/20 mix of methanol and aerosave oil. The idle's reliable and its much kinder to the engine. To be honest if it produces a fraction less power I'm not bothered... do you really need that extra 1 or 2 mph??
I can hear the US guys going "What... no nitro??" now
. My Y/A F16 takes off in our 550' strip with no problems.
That said, Irvine 10% will do fine.

My last one was 12 1/2lbs (I had some ordnance on it) and I'll admit I didn't build the lightest one this time
I reckon the OS91/Ramtec was about 11-12lbs static. I really couldn't say enough good things about this model.
