Runway
 

We fly near Jerusalem Israel and we are about to asphalt our landing strip. although we only currently fly prop planes we wish to plan ahead and provide for jets. My question is what is a reasonable runway length. I would appreciate some advice .

We fly on 500 feet and flying jets on it is alright, although if you ever have a problem it can be a little tight. We will probably add around 200 to 250 feet to make it 700/750 feet of pavment when funds get right. IMHO with 700 feet or more you should not have a problem getting any sport and most scale jets down. Jets Over The Heartland only has 800 feet and they have a very nice event.

500 seems to be the average minimum across the board from what I understand. Although I've flown off 420 for over a year and some are dealing with even less. You gotta work hard to mess up with 800 feet.

I'm pretty comfortable with 600 feet. I get a little more stressed at 500 and less depending on the airframe.

Thanks for the info.
We had been planning for 350 but after reading your replies we decided to increase it to 550x50 with an option to add another 150 when the budget permits.
Dave thats a great looking runway, how wide is it.

My club flies off of 500x100 ft runway with about 50' of smoot grass runoff on both ends. It is great for sport jets and smaller scale jets. Some of the bigger jets do have a small problem getting down though. If they don't hit the numbers when they land they really have to apply the brakes hard to get stopped before going in the grass.

Our runaway have 385 meters long x 15 meters wide (1260 x 49 feats)....to big :)
Is more than you normally need fr a jet, but in some circumstances had help to safe a jet in a flame out or some other bad situation.

I think 15 meter or 49~50 feet wide is the right perfect dimension.
In length? minimum.....250 meters (800 feet)

The concept when we made Hobbyland (our club name) was to have a runaway for !QUOT!all situations landings!QUOT!.....

Our club is 600x60 with generous dirt overruns. I believe the overruns are most important at any field that is under 700ft.

Wow, that's some field looks brand new and built like a dream come true. Well done, Miguel! In a year I'm sure the grass will be coving all the open soil... in my opinion too long is the right way to plan a runway. Here in Colorado we fly consistently above 5,000 feet MSL so the absolute minimum length for us is 650 feet. On a hot day that puts our density altitude above 7,500 feet MSL... our best length would be 1,000 feet or more, it's just hard to find the money to do it. Dragging them in, aiming for the numbers, and preloading the brakes are standard procedures up here.

600 - 800 x 50 is a good starting point. If asphalt is as expensive there as it is here in the US that will pretty expensive, plus the prep work. If you can't arrange to have a grass runoff on the sides of ends, you may want to go quite a bit larger. A turbine will only eat sand once!!!

At that see level you don't need to take your planes to the field to say you were flying....:D:D

In 1 month + or - the grass will be fully ready :) at HobbyLand

If your club is in position of spending some extra $$,,,,go for 800 ft.
At the bottong line, the best runaway is the one you can afford [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif] Good Luck.
