Jtech,
You can balance the turbine wheel, compressor wheel and then the entire assembly on the shaft by using Wren's method - to put it simply its like balancing a prop on a high point balancer. It works excellently as there are many, many MW54's running happily up to 160,000 (including mine) that have been home balanced. Or, you can opt for an electronic balance and pay someone else to do it if you dont feel up to it. The JDE website has little info, for more go straight to Wren's website. LOADS of information and links to lots more. The "JDE 54" is simply a Wren 54 that has JDE scratched into the case and the same ECU with his decal on it. As far as I know the manual is not on line, but if you want some info just email me privately. Andrew |
JDE 54 flight eval
well..I managed to take advantage of the holiday and put the 54 in the air. If you remember from earlier posts, the 54 was installed into my converted Air Magic T-38.
the engine performed flawlessly from start up through it's first flight. my only engine related problem was with the engine spool time. perhaps I should have put more time on the engine but I felt confident enough to put the airplane in the air. I was rewarded with superb performance. The engine pushed the little white mouse with great authority. I'm still smiling from ear to ear despite the fact that I dorked away the landing and effectively rendered the 38 inoperative for some time. No worries, it will fly again just not anytime soon. The T-38 weighed 14lbs dry and carried 64oz of fuel. Although the flight was only 5 minutes long, I feel confident in recommending this engine to anyone looking for an inexpensive alternative in the 12lb class. It performed superb from idle all the way to 160k. I can't say enough good things about this engine. well, this effectively closes out this thread. Thanks for looking and don't forget, it's just a hobby to most of us. Life's too short to not have fun in your spare time. c'ya buck |
