True. RR knows a thing or two about engines. I lost my virginity in a 67 Silver Shadow. Which, interestingly enough, has a GM transmission!
I would put any piece of 1970s British Leyland machinery up against a 1970's era GM product, it's about even steven. Say, a Chevy Vega versus a rubber bumper MGB. Do a quarter mile drag race, see who finishes(if any) and see who sheds the most parts along the way...

WOW! ET, That's impressive! I'll bet that there are not many folks on either side of the pond that can claim that one! It sounds almost unbelievable. Did you have any witnesses, or were you alone at the time?:)

It really is a shame that we have lost MG / Rover. My ZTT station wagon is a fine car with a 2litre BMW turbo diesel engine that will do 47mpg and 120mph. I have covered over 70,000 miles in two of these without any problems.

It makes a great carrier for jet models.
It looks like a nice car. The thing is...except for the badge, what makes it so special? MG is a NAME, like Harley Davidson or BMW or Mini Cooper...that's the number one thing you are selling. Uniqueness. So why put it on an ordinary car? It's doomed. It's so blind. They needed to do something so that (like a Mini or a Beetle) when one rolled by, people would say "hey, look, it's an MG!" They really blundered...the miscalculation, the misunderstanding, is so gross as to be a stain on the Abingdon history.
That's not to say they did not make fine cars, I'm sure they did, but, boy, did they miss the mark. As evidenced by their demise.
A shame.

Does anyone have an E Type Jaguar or a kit built AC Cobra.
I love those cars, could never afford one of course.
Better buy a lottery ticket this week.

My father drives a 73 etype ragtop since new, he has 118,000 miles on it, which is pretty remarkable. Lots of expensive maintainance, no short cuts, and the thing is still going strong and looks like new. I recently passed up on an e-type project car...I don't have the time or money to keep up with that car, it's out of my league. Always something that needs doing, and can only be done by a trained Jaguar mechanic. At least with the 12s. Different for the other engines.
I have driven a couple of different kit Cobras, one was pretty junky, but the other was pretty incredible. They vary wildly in quality, the various kits, but you can do one for cheap. The really nice one I drove had less than $20k into it, ran on jaguar suspension, for the most part. I also got to drive somethign called a Beck Spyder, a Porsche 550 replica, with a VW engine done up to 120hp, it was the fastest thing I have ever seen, just amazing, really changed my head around about kit cars. They really vary.

Seriously...when people return their "smashing riposte" and polish it off with "LOL!" it always makes me laugh. Not out loud. It's like your..."at band camp!", it pretty much blunts and pointed barbs...

This discussion just reinforces my attitudes about the UK and the US.

We are the impetuous, brash (and overgrown!) little brother...........the UK is the knowing, refined older brother.

In the end we have been, and always will be, brothers.

Congratulations on the 2012 Olympics, the only thing better than landing the Olympics is beating the frogs to get it!!!!

Oy. What a bunch of hogwash. Somewhere along the lines of "we would STILL be flying the B-58 if the Liberal Hollywood Commie types had not ruined it!" It's baloney. It's a rewrite of history. It's up there with "the moon landings were faked in a studio in Tulsa."

You really are a most obnoxious and ignorant person. I suppose you are going to claim that the Lightning first flew in 1980, that Duncan Sandys never existed etc.

RE: The shackles finally come off Typhoon.

Wow, What did I do? I just wanted top start a thread, not a war:D
As for the Typhoons acceleration, I wasn't in the cockpit reading the ASI but the commentattor made this claim two days running. Furthermore I saw it with my own eyes. I have never seen a plane go fron Cessna speed to transonic in halgf a runways length before. He did his pull up dead on show centre which in my estimation is about a mile. I spent Sunday morning right under the Typhoon talking to the ground and aircrew. Two things were made clear. The service aircraft have the new engines with about 30% more power than the developement aircraft. There have been many restriction placed on the type up to now, since, as is usual with such a complex system, bugs are ironed out.
This is why we are only now seeing what this aircraft can really do. Thye strategists have stated that the only aircraft the the Typhoon won't have an edge on is the F22. So since it is unlikely that Britain will go to war with America we'll be ok. Then again, having read this thread, I am not so sure!
BTW easytiger, What HarryC said about the Lightning and idiot British politicians sabotaging our aircraft industry is a matter of histirical fact.
Al;so Guys the idea that the Lightning could only go in a straight line was untrue. This aircraft could outurn anything in its era. I Met Group Captain Jake Jarron a few years ago. He was the last lightining wing boss. He told me they could handle anything that the met until the F-15 came along. Today the F-15 will be outclassed by the Typhoon and the F-22. That progress, but both were classic fighters of their age.
Regards,

John

I see the Englishers as a dweeby little pale cousin who is allergic to everything and never goes outside...but that's just me!
Scotsmen excepted. About time they started their own military and sealed the border. Belive me, you will be better off.
The Olympics...thank God they did not pick NYC to suffer through it. They were going to build a stadium literally in my back yard...I don't know if any of you live near a stadium, but the one thing I have noticed is that having a stadium in your neighborhood does not usually IMPROVE things.

Dear All
I have just turned Sky news on and seen this Multiple bomb blasts in London with at least one
fatality. After the euphoria of winning the olympic bid and the wonderful live8 concert at
Murrayfield last night. Now this.

This news has for me, put this thread into perspective.

Hi folks, have read this partly stupid discussion about "everything is great and big in america" and "good old England"

FUN ON:

And to give some oil for your fire. Where would you be without the germans :D

Do our American friends know that more than 60% of your people have roots in germany (4th or 5th generations ago?)
And oh yes, one of your stealth fighters (B2) is mainly designed from the stolen Horten Airplanes (of course not technologie wise but from the design and of course the idea behind the Horten wasn't stelath technologie)[>:]

Oh yes and i forgot all the jets using jet engines based on the design of the ME-262 multi staged fan engines. Ah and our nice Mr. Wernher von Braun who supported you to get some Metal in the air.

Ah yes and then your first plane with its supersonic capabilities. The only thing impressive with this machine is that chuck Yeager survived it. It is reported that some ME-262 pilots have reached mach1 but unfortunately were killed because of loosing some unneccessary parts:D:D

And by the way, the best cars are built in germany and they all go exactly where you want no matter how fast you're:eek:

FUN OFF

I forgot something Teh british tin can (lightning) is the most uggliest plane i have ever seen and the F-22 is the WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW Plane!!!!!

Excuse me to be incorrect.

Over 60 million Americans are of German ancestry. Of these, 23 million are of German ancestry alone ("single ancestry"), and another 40 million are of partial German ancestry. Of those who claim partial German ancestry, 22 million identify "German" as their primary ancestry ("first ancestry"). 30% of American whites are at least of partial German ancestry (about 12% of US whites are only of German ancestry). They are the largest white ethnic group in the northern United States (excluding New England), and form about half the white population in the Upper Midwest.

You can find these numbers easily if you inform yourself a bit in google or wiki or just try to read some history book.
