RE: Ozark Mountain Jets - - - CANCELED
No Ben, I do not have any new information.
Based on Skeet's original post, I kept all of my correspondence isolated to my AMA DVP. I intend to maintain this strategy until I see a need to change it. I am hoping that the 2 initial "victims" of this new policy will at least give us some idea of how to fight this in the future. My hope is that given Jerry Caudle's somewhat unique situation (in that he is the actual FBO of Metropolis Airport) and the fact that he knows that town like the back of his hand, he will help set guideposts for the rest to follow with regard to these FAA regulations. I do not think it will be easy, as it appears the FAA is leaving a very narrow window to operate in, and if Jerry cannot get through the window, no one can. I have no special access to Jerry, BTW, it is just we are buying our tickets today for Superman so we are kind of up on the current status. If I hear anything else I will post it. |

It seems my earlier sarcasm was not understood by some (Another user insisted on attacking my good friend Skeet, basically calling him a liar).
I have known Skeet for years. As I suspected, his initial post in this matter was correct. Anyone who knows Skeet knows that he is an embodiment of all that is good in this hobby. I am proud to call him my friend. Again, I am sorry if my casual sparring with another user caused Skeet or any of his friends any consternation, that was certainly not my intent. Regards, |
RE: Ozark Mountain Jets - - - CANCELED
Anyone know for sure who or what stirred up this can of worms......I've seen a similar thing happen here in Fond du Lac, which for 20+ years was the site of the IAC Championships the week after the EAA.....it was an important event, since the scores of the top 5 male and female Unlimiteds, added to those at the Nationals in Texas in September determined who was to be on the World Aerobatic Championships team the following year.......and brought thousands of bucks into the FDL local economy......
Worked well till they added gliders to competition.....instant fit hit the shan........gliders routinely had crappy handhelds for communication, i.e position reports while setting up for landing, which were often unintelligible compared to the nice King Radios in our Pitts and Extras with good outside antennas.....and they also were committed to land quite soon after their sequence was over as they usually ended up quite low.......they sort of became the kind of "No Radio....No Unicom talk" planes the FAA notes in (a) of their Aug 15th letter..... It took 2 near-miss incident reports by heavy iron jets, one based at FDL, and the other from Chicago to basically shut the event down, depite the pleas of the IAC thru the parent EAA........if Poberezny can't get it done, no one can......well, he didn't..... But.......One good point is that the FAA, in most circumstances is not as monolithic in their rule interpretation as they make out to be.......after being rejected for a waiver to put on an experimental generator on my Pitts S1-T by 2 FAA-FSDO offices in Milwaukee and Minneapolis(submitted the reams of paperwork), longtime, Chicago-based, aerobatic airshow pilot and airline pilot, Bob Davis walked it thru the Chicago FSDO without a peep for me......never did figure that one out......being an insider really helps with the Feds, no doubt..... So hopefully common sense will prevail over time with the FAA.....but for now, something has them really warped over some incident(s) at this time....... Tom |

ORIGINAL: Steve Collins All possible alternatives were investigated thoroughly before arriving at the decison to cancel the event. |

Easy Tiger, They dont because I already checked. I too am a contest director and have looked into it since I live 30 miles from Sullivan. It all about the FAA right now so nothing is going to happen until the AMA gets something worked out with the FAA. -Patrick

They don't have two runways? Or they refused the event?
