Micro Video Camera

I was over in the Super Jet South Event thread when I came across a post regarding a micro video camera that David Shulman had in his bandit at the event. I guess there was alot of interest in the micro camera. Well they are selling the camera for 225.00 ready to go.

Well I have one of these cameras and it cost me only 50.00 to put it together. The little micro camera that the Shulman's are selling on their website can be had from CVS Drugstores for the low price of 29.99. You have to open the case of the camera and solder the wires to it to provide power and usb connectivity which should take someone with soldering skills approx 20-30 minutes. The software for downloading the video is shareware and can be had from several sites on the web.

Go to this site and you can read all about how to make the mods to the cameras and where to get the shareware drivers from.

http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/index.php?c=5

If you want one but don't have a CVS near you let me know and I can pick one of the cameras up and ship it to you for the cost of the camera, shipping and packing materials. I don't want to make money off of this because I have used this forum to increase my knowledge from my fellow modelers and I have had fellow modelers send me things to try out before I buy, not knowing me from adam. So this is my way of returning the favor to you all.

Thanks,

Patrick.

Todd,
The camera they are selling does not have a TX or RX. The video has to be downloaded to a computer via usb.

Just to clear up any confusion go to the below two sites in two separate browser windows and take a look at the cameras shown. You will see that they are the same camera. The second site actually shows the camera how it looks when it comes from CVS and the PCB board once you open the case.

Has anyone tried to use the CVS camera as the one that Shulman is selling? After reading into it, I don't believe it is as easy as simply removing the CVS camera from its case and going to the flying field after soldering some wires. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I would like to see it to believe it.

I have a 2.4GHz wireless system that I'll be flying soon in Buck's A10X. I bought mine complete with a high gain antenna, a 12V RX and video demodulator, and the camera/TX assembly used for about $100. The new systems can be found here:

[link=http://www.boostervision.com/boostervision/default.htm]BoosterVision[/link]

Basically they just repackage all of the components without any apparent changes - I can track down the OEM supplier(s) if anyone is interested, you might be able to put someting together fairly inexpensively.

RE: Micro Video Camera

Oh yeah - I tried the CVS camera setup. Two things you need to know... one, you need to hack the firmware to make it readable via the USB cable, and two, rumours abound that these cameras are about to be discontinued. The High Power rocketry community has tried them with mixed results; the basic $100 900 MHz wireless systems work better, or you can find some really cheap (like $40!) solid state DVR's from online salvage and discount stores that can easily be modded to work.

we won't be flying it this weekend due to the Fire Hazard surrounding So Cal but I'm sure we'll be taxing it around and with enough pressure probably get Barry to download some of the video. if anyone is interested

Mace,
I am just passing on information from first hand knowledge. As I said I have one that I have modded. So if you want to pay the shulman's 225.00 for something that would only cost you 60 at the most feel free.

DBarry,
If you get the camera with firware version 3.01-3.4 which is the most common at the moment it does not have to be hacked you just have to use the shareware software to download the video. I don't think these camera's are going to be discontinued as CVS is making a mint off of them. I appreciate you posting the link to the other system as well. I just posted this information because I thought it was seriously messed up that they are trying to charge people over 200.00 for something that they can do for themselves.

Patrick -

Good news about the latest versions. I am with you re the cost of the camera!

Do not want to hijack your thread, but for those who are interested, here's a link for some really cheap digital vidcams that could be used pretty easily and all cost under $100. I have seen the Mustek and JVC cams used in 20+ G HPR launches and they have taken plenty of abuse. For $60 (or less if you are willing to dig a bit deeper) they are almost throw-aways.

PS - Buck's right [&o] no where to fly Jets in our neighborhood (SoCal) until we get some rain...and the fire season just started off. :(

I bought one on the way to the flying field tonight at CVS, they had about 20 there. I had come across this mod before and have wanted to try it. I'll know sometime next week what my results are.

Later,

Good news to all who were interested in making a camera for themselves but could only find camera's with version 3.62. The 3.62 has been hardware hacked and will not fry the camera while performing the hack. Go to this site and read how to do the hack.

RE: Micro Video Camera

I have the same system, wife gave it to me for my birthday. I have flown it in my Kingcat and it works pretty good. We have added an Arcos (sp?) digital recorder and display which allows for real time viewing and recording (so the pilot can see it), it is the size of a PDA.

Originally we taped the camara to the side of the pilots seat, which worked ok. I am working on a better long term mounting solution that, I hope, will pretty much hide the camara.

I am not sure I buy the range they talk about in the web site you point to, but it looks to be good enough.

RE: Micro Video Camera

Results are positive by the way, the hacked camera works great, the hack takes about 20 to 30 minutes I'm at my brothers now and will post some video next week. CVS came out with a new "unhackable" software version, however, even that version was hacked a few times before last Friday, however, on Tuesday of this week, it was hardware hacked with 100% accuracy. These are neat little cameras as seen in Shulman's video, the recording ability is easily good enough.

RE: Micro Video Camera

Do you need to "hack" the camera prior to every use or is it open for multiple use after one hack?

Mark,
You only have to hack the camera once and you are done.

I would like to see some pics on how to mount the cam to a plane.

Patrick,
What software are you using to convert the AVI to WMV or MPEG? I have noticed that I had to dowload a codec to make the avi work on my computer, but if I e-mail the avi to someone, they have to load the codec also, unless you convert the video first.

I have not mounted the camera to one of my jets yet, still experimenting with best placement so I can get forward facing video.

I did not have to load the Codec to watch my video but I have heard of many who have. I use Pinnacle System's Studio Plus 9 to convert all my video, but you can use windows movie maker if you dont' already have video editing software. It is free and pretty siimple to use.

How do you hook up the USB cable?
Depends on how you want to use it. If you want to use it to shoot video from a plane, I solder the male end of a servo ext to the usb and a female end to the power on the camera side. Then I solder the opposite ends onto the USB cable. You can use the power lead on the camera with a standard RC battery connection or you can make a cable to plug directly into your receiver for power. This way you don't have to have several different wires to plug into your camera to power and download.

Go to the camera hacking site listed in this thread and take a look at their how to section. It has many explanations of how to make cables.

I have read all these posts and others and i am in the CCTV / Security business. but i still ordered my camera from the Shulman site.

i just cant be bothered to go through all that "hacking". For the extra $ you get a professional product with a warranty, not a hacked together mess

Following are few of my hacks. Enjoy and if you have any ? let me know.

If you can not find any in your neck of the woods, let me know and I will get it for you. All you have to do is to pay for cost $29.99 + Indian Tax = $32 + shipping method of your choice.
