RE: what was your first jet
ORIGINAL: Nightwalker I guess my first ducted fan was a little semi scale F-16 that I built years ago from magazine plans as a kid with a RK-049 in it. Bryce Bryce, I built that same plane, it was my first fan also. It was kind of boxy in the fuse to hold the fan. The plans were from MA I think. Regards, Bill |

RE: what was your first jet
My first jet model was a ducted fan F-4 Phantom, from the Nick Ziroli plans. 35" span, with a Axiflow 25 / OS.25 vfdf engine. Fixed gear, and all planked/sheeted balsa. This was probably in 1988. I remember seeing these plans advertised in MAN magazine, along with a little Viggen, and later, an F-15.
Per the plans, this model was waaay tail heavy! I'd like to build another one though! |

RE: what was your first jet
f-15 sport eagle (mid 80s) K&B 45 and Turbax 1. Waaaay underpowered - and prob heavy too. 1/4" balsa sheet construction. Took a good push in a strong headwind to get it off in 200'. Flew easy enough when it got going tho.
Turbine? Still too rich for my blood.... Jeff |
RE: what was your first jet
Ziroli F-9 Panther, scratch built w/ P-80 Power!

Byron F-16, fixed gear, OS61vf powered. "roll back the callendar to summer 1982"
First turbine powered, Mirage 4000 (own design), RAM 500 |
RE: what was your first jet
F-15 Tomcat then an F17 Hornet.
Turbines in both. |
RE: what was your first jet
At first I had a DF F-16 from Byron. OS 77 and Byrojet for power. Then a F-16 from Gleichauf, with a Rossi 90 and Gleichauf fan. Great engine (on 30 % Nitro)
My first turbine powered jet was a F-15 from Shleicher. Had one flight with it, on the second it was a twin. Next was a F-16 from Avonds. Then a Gripen. A F-18C arrived today. Waiting for a Hawk and a Boomerang XL. I also recommend a F-16 to be the first jet powered model as long as you can safely handle a 60/90 size pattern model. Gudmund |
RE: what was your first jet
I too recommend the F-16 Sabre for a first jet.

RE: what was your first jet

Well the F-18 Raptor is also a great flyer. Or the B-29 Stratofortress. I really know my planes.

Here are a couple pictures of the Berkley F-8 Crusader I kitbashed. Actually there are no Berkley parts in this one, as I redrew the plans and scratch built it. Ailerons and full flying stabs, with the nose gear steering hooked to the aileron servo.

RE: what was your first jet
That rocks! Did it actually get airborne with RK049 power? What does it weigh? I need to find pics of mine...

RE: what was your first jet
Hello @all,
I'm a new member of this community, so first a brief introduction: My name is Andreas Kasselmann, I'm 43 years old and from Germany. (so, please excuse my english!) I'm flying R/C models for 10 years and jets for 2 years. My first jet was a sport full composite T-33 from PAF with a wing span of 1.70m. Flew great and very fast... till the first and last failsave... Now I'm flying a Ziroli Panther with a 8kg Frank TJ67. Very good looking and well flying bird! Also I'm building up (or should I say "mounting"?) a SM Hawk. I'm looking forward to fly it this year, we will see. Hopefully next year I will finish my MD450 Ouragan (wingspan about 2.60m) powered by an AMT Pegasus, very nice engine. Kind regards from Germany Andreas |
