Dont Trust Paypal !!!!!!!
Originally posted by heliboy7 sfaust, I agree with you when i'm the seller. & ofcoarse dont ship anything until the funds reach that final account. Since the transaction on the credit card is with PayPal and you, and not you and the actual buyer, you may not have the same rights. Its an open question I have wondered about for a while now. Luckily, I've never had to find out. Has anyone had to get the credit card company involved to back out a transaction that went through PayPal?? I would be interested in the outcome. Anyone?? |
Concerning Paypal
I have read through all of these posts concerning Paypal and it looks like most users do not really understand the power that Paypal has over your money when you deal with them. For anyone who has these questions, I would suggest that you take the time to read the sellers agreements sections very carefully as I have and you will be very cautious when using Paypal in the future. It can cost you a lot of money if you do not pay attention to what you are doing during your transactions as some have experienced here. If I am not mistaken, as a seller you authorize Paypal to automatically deduct any fraudulant funds from your account as part of the terms of using their site to conduct sales transactions. You can be liable for any fraudulant credit cards you agree to accept also and I believe these chargebacks can come for quite some time after the transaction has been completed.
I have not had any problems personally, but I would strongly urge everyone to read the sellers agreement so that you know what you are responsible for when you do business with Paypal. Both, the buyers and sellers agreement are very lengthy and appear to be legal contracts. There is some liability coverage with Paypal but I believe that as a seller, in order to be eligible, you must make sure that you are receiving money from a verified user as mentioned in an earlier post and that you ship to their confirmed address on their Paypal account. I think that Stephen mentioned moving money around in accounts but I would think that this is only a short term solution since you can be responsible for repaying fraudulant funds as a seller. Paypal will likely pursue it thru other means if they cannot immediately get it out of your account. I guess the bottom line is that Paypal is not as secure as most people believe so just be careful. I have probably made close to a hundred transactions with them and never had an issue but I never accept money from anyone who is not verified and does not have a confirmed shipping address. And, as mentioned earlier I always wait until the money clears my account... |

Rather then put the burden of proof and all the paper work on us to show why PayPal should give the money back that theyjust reached in a took, it puts the burden of proof and all the paperwork on PayPal to prove why we should write them a check for it for the amount they are requesting. They just can't take it and point to their service agreement and say "So use me if you think you are right" It doesn't guarantee you will keep the money, but it goes a long way towards keeping it, rather then trying to get it back after they took it. Possession is 9/10th of the law, so put the law on your side :D |
Paypal
I see what you are saying Stephen. It just makes it a little more difficult for them and making them prove they are right is an excellent idea. At least you still have your money in the meantime just in case they are not right!! GAry

Dont Trust Paypal !!!!!!!
I have actually called my card company (Visa) to ask about my protection. I specifically asked about Paypal and C2it. As a buyer, I am covered 100% under the fraud clause on my card agreement. As a seller I don't think it's as good a deal. If I can use either of these online services, I am completely confident that I will either get my goods or my money.

Dont Trust Paypal !!!!!!!
For what its worth, I have been using PayPal for two years now, never a problem, maybe I am lucky.
95% of my customers use Paypal to make payments to me and never a problem. My customers don't have to show me there credit card numbers and they have more confidence. I personaly like the system. |

Dont Trust Paypal !!!!!!!
Well for what its worth here is my opinion...
I have been using Paypal since the day it was opened to Canadian customers. I both buy and sell (private and on auctions like ebay) and have hundreds and hundreds of transactions with paypal - all positive! I mainly trade in "small money" items, usually $25 to $100 allthough I did recently sell a $1200 US NIB radio system. Even that went very well. I just waited for the money to clear into my bank account (about 4 days) and then sent the item. No biggie! As a seller, it is well worth the cost to me to NOT have to take the cheques/money orders down to my bank during my working hours (i am self employed, ever hour I lose is $40 off my wage) where I usually end up spending 1/2 hour in line, then have to wait 30 days for the cheques to clear my bank! Yup, as an "international" seller I can accept money from guys all over the world and get it into my accout at home, by myself on the computer. Thats worth it to me. As a buyer, I appriciate the ease of paying for something without, again, having to go to the bank or post office to make a US money order and then send it, wait 2 weeks for the seller to receive it, etc. I think it is a good system for some, not for others. BUT if you understand the risks, are willing to take some (there are allways risks in non face to face deals anyhow) and make your own opinion. I dont think you can flat out say "paypal is bad" when so many like it and have good luck using it. Once I even got a call at home from the Paypal guys askign me how everything was going, and whether or not I was happy with the system, etc. That was good service I think.
