Well, I guess it depends on your definition of "man-rated". No doubt a small turbine that was "man-rated", say to the standards of the Shuttles SSMEs, could be produced, but it likely would cost a great deal of money. And there appears to be no reason for anyone to spend that kind of cash. The two that the guy has on the glider: well that's a VERY different situation. He has redundancy that actually works (if he looses one, he can continue flying. Not so with the nut in the Jet-Pack). And the Cri Cri guy? Well again if one quits, he does not instantly crash. He can look around for a field to set down in.

I think it is very goofy for him to announce to the world that it is a workable pack and they are for sale before he has done it, very goofy.. he must really want/need financing. the smart thing to do would have been to wait till he had a working prototype and proof of it working.... unless,,,,, he has tested it, found out it won't work, somehow didn't get dead, and now he's giving up and trying to recoop his money with a scam,,, or,,,,, maybe he's trying to get some better ideas from all the chatting about it..... and,,, if there are 9 idiots who sent him money then they should contact me, i'll sell them the same pack for half that. wonder if he has patented it already too..:D

he bought a parachute harness on the NET (auction Site) with all these disclaimers. I don't believe he thinks he'd actually make it to a significant altitude like he claims!

You do not need a "man rated" engine to power a glider or any other aircraft as long as it is expermental. You can not carry passangers, operate for money, etc. That is how you can fly a home built with a lawnmower engine, VW engine, etc. Just my 2 cents. Bob

The jet pack is completed, The test area is being built this week 1/22/06. If the weather cooperates testing will begin 1/27/06.

But as today is test day...... wonder if he will have it tethered....... if so I have a feeling he could end up like a control line model and if it does work in respect of all engines firing together, we should change his name to Buzz LightBeer..... Not flying "falling with style":D:D!!!

I think I have spotted the fatal flaw in his design.....

The pack is back mounted, with the exhaust directing thrust to the ground.

So, OK for vertical flight - well, sort of in theory giving the benefit of the doubt right..... soooooo


Forward flight, vector exahust away from body, tipping forwards a la helicopter, and forward flight achieved. Yeah?, with me?.;)

To come to a halt........

Vector nozzles forward.

Hmmm and burn legs off whilst halting, hence the extra flight time as body mass is reduced.[:@]

Do we take our hat off to the guy who sold the turbines or do we lambast him for poor practices!:D

I think his fatal flaw is thinking he can do it. I think he has only about 5 pounds positive thrust. Not taking into account temps and pressures, he thinks he can fly 100mph at 10,000ft on that thrust.....

The engines are angled out away from the pilot. This should give stability like a dihedral wing does for a plane, same as the successful bell rocketpack below, and will help keep the heat off of him... I also think this guy is "out there" with this jetpack, but only because of our own distrust in the engines reliability.. Let's just say- if the engine reliability were not a factor, what would keep it from working any different than the very flyable bell pack, which is about the same set-up except for propulsion????? as I said before I think it's dumb to announced it and try to sell it before it's proven, it does seem very scammy.. but other than engine reliability, and forget fuel consumption/ flt time.. why would it not work????? .. Is the engine reliability factor the only reason we think it is bs... No 100mph at 10,000 ft bull, but just simple hover/flt just like the bell pack.. and yes, even if it does work and engines were no worry, it will still be very dangerous.. Let's have it all you naysaying engineers, why will it fail to work other than motor problems??? A bicycle doesn't look like it should work to me, but it does..

Well, for one thing, the Bell pack had the thrust line a lot closer to the CG, fore/aft wise. The nozzles were far outboard to help with heat and to get that thrust line far more forward than this goofball can get with eight AMTs.

But it don't matter anyway! He does not need another reason besides motor reliability. That one is PLENTY!!!

OK, we all agree he's a nut, but sorry i still find it fascinating/fun to speculate the theory.. would he not just hang at a different angle with a different thrust line. I would think it would pivot him under the thrust line center to c/g like a pendulum. Would it not? If he can tilt them fore and aft it seems he would find a neutral position close to the bell-pack where he would be stable fore and aft.

Well, yeah, he could lean backwards and the pack could angle the engines such that the thrust was going through the CG (but it did not look like it was made that way in the photos, IIRC). But then the burnt leg issue is far worse as to land or takeoff, your legs need to hang even further into the flow!

If he can tilt the engines nose aft far enough to pass the thrust line through the CG (doubtful from the photos), it should hover with him in a slight face-down position, if he doesn't stumble forward and fall down first (big IF). Looks like he's planning to use differential throttle for left/right control. Unless he's got a really non-linear throttle controller, this will be a big problem...not because of spoolup time so much as twitchiness. The AT-450 makes full thrust at 112K RPM, around 50% thrust at 100K. Almost no lag time (and very little throttle travel) between these two speeds. Despite the slight outward tilt (which does provide some lateral stability, at the cost of some lift), heat and FOD are still going to be big issues.

Biggest problem will be his lack of pilot skill. Theoretically, a helicopter is stable due to pendulum effect, but there aren't many guys out there who could fly one first time without instruction. A good helicopter pilot could probably make this thing hover with a little tethered practice. Actually traveling in a controlled fashion is another matter entirely. If he can demonstrate a hover, he can probably get funding to continue his efforts. I understand he IS going to tether for the first attempts. Gotta' give him credit for trying!
