jet pack project
Holy smoke Jet lovers, look at ebay item 4602107082 can anyone ID the turbines and thrust used on this guys contraption?
|
RE: jet pack project
you mean here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=4602107082 i just see a kid play with a lot of money who havent work them out on its own result of all that: AMT ..i think??...made a lot of money in a sec......one ded kid...a big fire somwhere.. .....modell turbine engine makes landing on its own on aifel tower on news and ...thats it!....i realy cant see the point or a goal of all this. rocket man fly for real since many years ago... and was army project.. this......well when you chrash ...i hope one of this engines land on my back yeard:D:D .......sooo many wasted money take care people |
RE: jet pack project
The funny part is he isn't selling the jet pack, just the right to name it:
"I am selling you the right to name my jet pack. The name you choose, providing it is not vulgar or racist, will be branded on my production jet packs as well." Starting price $10,000 and buy it now price is 1/2 million dollars! To think, all those ad agencies charge their clients for coming up with good product names when their clients should be charging them. :D |
RE: jet pack project
I had an intriguing look at the pictures and then hit the website which is www.skywalkerjets.com.
The comments are based on what I could see, and may well be totally erroneous, but.......[:-] I think it may well be a huge hoax, but if not then I have serous concerns and would not be flying it!. Firstly all the motors point down, what about lateral stability, i.e you can go up, but how do you tilt across on axis!!! I am assuming some icnredible gyro stability and puffer valves would be required, and we know the throttle response of out turbines, its good but not that good......... Where does all the fuel sit? There appears to be little flight control mechanism if you look at the hand holds, they appear, well, hand holds and not joysticks as such. I could be very well wrong, but this does not strike me as a flyable and workable project. Apparently it has taken two years to get to this stage, and I reckon with the angle iron and steel clamps used, Eddie Weeks could mill it up in 1/2 day or so! If I am wrong I heartily apologise, but would eagerly learn more. And if I bought it now as a name I'd call it The Titannic. Gazzer |

RE: jet pack project
I think I would call it the "Dodo" an extinct flightless bird, and if you try and fly it you will be extinct as well
|
RE: jet pack project
If you look closely you will indeed see that the handholds are joysticks. They are both at different angles to each other and they do run to twin push pull rods going to each bank of turbines. Although I do not see any lateral control system. But what just doesn't do it for me is the black electrical tape on the shoulder pads.

RE: jet pack project
155 lbs with fuel, talk about a weight on your shoulders. When one of the engines shuts down the 45 lbs of differential thrust should make for a nice pinwheel effect.
|
RE: jet pack project
Maybe its designed not to fly, just for skiing..... uphill....:D
I also like the fact that the photo's are in the guys bedroom, and that he only needs a flight coverall and helmet!!! Someone ought to email him the RCU details so he can if he would stoop so low, tell us more about the system. We could learn some lessons and hell, even make a scale R/C model with 8 Wren 44 or the really small engine seen recently is it the Nanotec? He is also as photegenic as I am but has that slightly off the wall look on his website[&:] Anyway, he should not listen to us, Pioneers are always told things are not possible then prove us wrong, that's why they have the Darwin awards for services to humanity:D Boy would that keep us entertained, where's ET when you need him?[X(] Gazzer |

RE: jet pack project
Skywalker Jetpacks will be sold on a first come first serve bassis. A $100,000 deposit will be required to reserve your position on the order list. At present, the total price for the Skywalker jetpack will be $200,000. If the orders grow to rapidly, the price will increase to keep the orders down to a reasonable level. However, if you reserve a jetpack at a set price, you will retain that price.
ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D good stuff.... wonder how much cash he has flushed making that piece of junk.... Mike |
RE: jet pack project
Even worse, doesn't eBay charge a percentage of the buy it now just to list it as a buy it now?

Have you ever seen the movie The Forty Year Old Virgin?;)

RE: jet pack project
C'mon guys, hes' trying to do it properly, as George pointed out, there are clear operating instructions on the panel. Oh and 1, yes 1 Engine data terminal for the 8 engines, cheeesh I' struggling to breathe between laughing.....
Maybe if like Todd we get a prize for naming the pack, perhaps he would give us some of the masking tape on the straps... Looking at the links George gave, they reckon 150 ish feet is their record vertically and it only works for about 25 seconds on average!!! Jetpack is a real improvement!!!!! GAzzer |
RE: jet pack project
people pleeeeeeease go and try to untestant
what move the sticks do to the bases of the turbines!!and you will laugh big time!! its only a two rods each side!!!HAHAHAHAHAHAHA SO i say there is a chanse this to fly! just to be in a speed already!! so: yep i say he will fly! a skateboard!!like a detaching landing gear!!! laydown on it /head frond! / full throtle / down the highway /and after few sec pull up hard! i say he will go somewhere! cant estimate where and for how long ...but im working on it! everythink for the science!! ....after landing..wish i would be there and offer him 5$ for each turbine:D:D ..............there must be also there the ESTES ROCKET ONE USE ENGINES??? it would be a ceaper idea for the begining!! but he is ready for all the way! HAHAHAHAHAHA >>>>>>>>>>> I LOOOOOVE INTERNET:D:D:D wondering also about his hearing status after the test flight with 4 turbines on each earHAHAHAHAHAHAHA |
RE: jet pack project
I just hope he has some good ear plugs!
|
RE: jet pack project
7 gallons of fuel...... 8 olympus = roughly a 2 minute flight, where did he get 5 minutes from??????????????
|
RE: jet pack project
Damn, I thought he was a new AMT turbine salesman! Coming to the next jet meet near you.
|
RE: jet pack project
2 thoghts on this one. first, i would pay BIG BUCKS to watch, second, i think playboy is backing him. it will be called the bunnybackpakjetboy. tracy is missing out. this guy is a step ahead of him. a chick magnet for sure. barry

RE: jet pack project
First there was the B-52 and now this . . . . . . . .
|
RE: jet pack project
His design looks basically sound. No gyros are needed. The original Bell jetpack steered mostly by simple weightshift. He's got enough thrust to hover himself and fuel with one engine out, but during spoolup it could get exciting. He should be burning about 1 gallon/minute at a sea level hover. It might just work, if he's careful on his first test flights. The biggest difference between eccentric genius and nutcase is how much money you have.
|
RE: jet pack project
I say cut the poor guy some slack, He may be 40 and live with his mother but at least he is working on something halfway cool. Misguided or not I hope he has success and does not end up killing himself in the process.
If you have ever seen the the Hiller pocket chopper or flying platform they were very basic but they worked. |
RE: jet pack project
:Di agree! if you r not trying you r not flying!!
...im trying to let it go but is soooooo funny:D:D so what brand r this turbines? |
RE: jet pack project
How the heck is he supposed to be able to start 8 Olympii reliably? As Eddie can tell you from the DC-10 experience, there was no way to hear propane light-off on the second Peggy. He had to look at temp on the EDT to know it was lit. Now you could do that seven times on this turd, but that's gonna be a MAJOR pain and a time consuming process. But I asked the dude this on eBay. He said this was only a pre-production prototype and the real McCoy would have "electric start" (I assume he meant full auto-start). I still say that there is no way that will work cause a large percentage of the time you are gonna get at least one failed start out of eight. Sure, it won't happen all of the time, but it will happen enough of the time to make this impractical. But that too is OK, cause it would no doubt save this fool's life!! [:o]

RE: jet pack project
Seams to me there is a thrust/body C/G issue. I believe thrust should be centered vertically down from shoulders as the case with the well know flying rocket pack. Looks like most of the thrust is centered behind him.
David Hudson |
RE: jet pack project
David is correct. As I remember it, that rocket pack from the 60's had the nozzles pushed forward outboard of the pilot's shoulders. Don't see that here. This is a scam that this guy is promoting to try to make a quick buck.
|
RE: jet pack project
It is much worse then a scam. No con man in his right mind would spend that much cash on a con. I think he actually believes this will work. Problem is, he has rocket scientists telling him it won't work and still won't listen. Sounds firmiliar....
Mark |
RE: jet pack project
Well, don“t know if the jet pack works, but certainly you can fly for a while with two turbines attached to the ankles and a batman suit... :)
I certainly admire Matias Duran (a Spanish r/c modeler) nerves! http://www.bird-man.com/?n=windtunnel&nose=6 Enrique |
RE: jet pack project
if i was in us i would give alot of publicity in this in every way!!
..so tv would be there on first take off and everybody oroun the worl could see the funny resolt:D:D:D:D ...............cose i think when he will try it he will say nowhere what hapent..and i would like to know!! ...every time its getin funier HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA |
RE: jet pack project
what if we could get "jetpackman, birdman, jetman, rocketman, and eddie weeks together in area 51, with unlimited materials and equipment for about a month?

Checked out his website. Hmmm, interesting look in his eyes....looks like all is not there...LOL but of course i'd be the first to apologize if all goes great in due time. Geniuses have that knack and sometimes, that [&o][&o][sm=bananahead.gif][sm=bananahead.gif] LOOK!

RE: jet pack project
i respect the guy for trying and hope he does it, but i must thro in a couple of things here.. 1- plz don't bring it to my club field, the old guys will have a fit and turn u in to the ama. 2- should he check with the jpo first? and 3- the problem of fuel consumption is easy, just like in the movie (the rocketeer) - elephant oil ! = much less fuel is needed, the only thing hard about that is getting them into the masher..:D
|
RE: jet pack project
SO!
,,,,,when is the big day??? .....also if it fails...:D:D how much for one turbine? :) |

What, you don't want Merkin-Man??? |
RE: jet pack project
They are indeed AMT-USA AT-450's. They are auto-start (don't equate "air start" with "manual start"). I can't speak for the other models, but I checked my logbooks and I've had 71 consecutive perfect starts from my air start 450's since the last engine maintenance (spring '05). The air start is cumbersome, but very reliable. Looks like he's got his control panel set up to start the engines in four pairs. Apparently, he's spent at least part of the two years getting a patent.
After further study of the photos, I see some potential serious problems, but if he'll tether it for the first test flights, he may be able to make it work. Gotta' give him credit for the effort, but the "buy the naming rights for $1M" part definitely gives the whole project a "snake-oil" feel. And remember, 80% right can still leave you 20% dead ;o) He claims he'll be ready to fly it this weekend...Hope he posts some videos. |
