Painting For Dummies

Antony,

I used to use the Martin Seynour paint system and never was able to paint as fast as with the PPG stuff. There is a big difference! Thinking back now the paint peeling up when the tape was pulled was one of the reasons why I switched. A lot of people will say the PPG or Dupont is not worth the extra money, but I have found the PPG to be the easiest paint to paint with. I have to drive 60 miles to get it but it is well worth the drive it just paints so much easier.

PPG v. Martin Senour

Thanks David:

How would you rate the durability of the PPG? I have found that although I get very nice results with Martin Senour it does seem a little more brittle and prone to chips than the spies heckler paints I have used.

Jetfreak, what kind of tape are you using.

I learned the hard way just like you. I use 3M blue vinal fine line tape. It comes in widths of 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2". It goes around corners very well and I have never had bleed through. I does cost around $7 a roll at the auto paint store (the only place I have ever found it), but it is worth it.

Ditto....As John stated, the 3M vinal is the way to go! You will never use another tape once you have tried it!

Antony,

THe PPG is very durable, I have only had it flake off one time and that was an off white color I had not gotten the fuselage perfectly clean and free of the mold release compound. I still have no idea how that happened.

Jetfreak,

You need to use the Blue fine line tape, there is some light green fine line tape that works well but is better for stright lines. Also make sure the surface is clean, I always rub my surface down with DX 330 cleaner (PPG) and then let it air dry, sometimes I accelerate the drying with air from the spray gun. Make sure and burnish the tape down as well. It is also a good idea to try and spray away from the tape so that you are not forcing the tape to lift. (This has never been a problem for me with the fine line tape)

Another tip to keep paint from seeping.

Once the base color is on and you mask for the trim color, go back over and spray a very light coat of the base color along the edge of the masking tape. This will seal the edges of the tape and you can then apply the trim color.

Also when using spray cans such as Krylon, place the can in a pot of fairly warm water" Not Boiling" before using. This will increase the pressure in the can and create a better flow at the nozzle.
