Super Etendard

With all these scratch build that have been going on, it really got me wanting to get one of these built.
What do you guys think about this plane? Always been one of my favorites. |

So I guess since no one has a kit, I got to make one on my own ;)
So I guess this will be my build thread. I probably wont be nearly as fast as you other guys but hopefully I will get it done soon enough. This will be an entire scratch....plug, molds, to flying prototype. I chose 1/8 scale which gives me about a 71 inch length and a 48 inch wingspan roughly. Thanks to my friend Bob and his new laser cutter I can get started this weekend. Etendard profile |

The plan is to have it rtf weight around 14lbs.
And here are the formers. Any tips or pointers on foam and shaping? Im all ears. |
RE: Super Etendard
So far so good Ronnie...

RE: Super Etendard
Notice the resemblence to a JMP Starfire I?

RE: Super Etendard
yeah alot!

RE: Super Etendard
Hey Ronnie
Looks good! I always liked the Super Etendard myself. With that wing area it will be a great flyer im sure. Go for it and good luck. |
RE: Super Etendard
Ronnie, I think that is my favorite of "foreign" jets

RE: Super Etendard
Hi Ronnie,
could you explain to me this elevator/ stab mechanism ? http://image.rcuniverse.com/forum/up...95/Ce69576.jpg Looks like the stab moves with a regular elevator [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] !!!!! |
RE: Super Etendard
Wonder if its for extra control subsonically. As I understand it supersonic requires an all flying tailplane due to the shockwave of air at that speed rendering eleveator flap control pretty useless. Looking at that picture it seems its using elevons but it might be the angle of the picture, I could not spot an aileron. Perhaps therefore its for extra control at take off and landing speeds?

RE: Super Etendard
So far yes the tailplane has been a mystery to me.
I have seen pictures with the whole stab in full up and others just the rear portion. I'm not 100% sure yet. For simplicity I was just going to create elevators instead of a full flying stab. It seems from what I have seen that the stab gets a little deflection and full up elevators for takeoff. Flys on full stab and lands with full stab and elevators. |
RE: Super Etendard
I found a bit about this on a flight sim creation.
Can't vouch for its accuracy but you know what the sim types are like. It suggests that this is a trim for when flaps are deployed and alter the pitch of the aircract, the "elevators" are automatically deployed to compensate for the attitude of the aircraft. Hey hey clearly "Bad attitude":D It makes sense, but I cant vouch for its accuracy, so would be worth finding out incase the elevators are not powerful enough Ronnie. I notice there are a lot of other bits on the tail section...... Gazzer |
RE: Super Etendard
I knew there was something out of the ordinary there !! Still is a bad looking jet :D
|
RE: Super Etendard
The A-4 Skyhawk has a similar setup. The A-4 stab is used to trim while the elevator is used for control. The big difference between the two designs is the A-4 is subsonic and the Super-E is supersonic.
I have a friend who flew the Super-E for the Argentine navy. I'll e-mail him the question and pass along his reply. This may take a few days. I have always wanted to model this plane. It's going to make a great project! Tom |
RE: Super Etendard
By the way, if you ever find yourself in New York city, the USS Intrepid museum has a Super-E on display. I believe it's a photorecon version.

I've built this one a few years ago and it was intended for a turbax fan unit, but I've bought a turbine before finishing it..... would be perfect for a wren 44 or the new generation of electric fans.
The plans was from Philip Noel, but I don't think that he ever released them. (thanks Dick!) The airplane is really sleek and the space inside is very limited. If you don't make an inlet liner it will be ok and you'll be able to place the tank at the CG location. I've sent a mail to a full size Super etendard/Rafale pilot (also a jet modeller) to get an accurate answer about the tailplane! Florent |
RE: Super Etendard
Hey rider, think there would be enough room for my mw44 in that bird ?
who makes it, is this kit still available ? |

Hi,
Yes the Super Etendard is a nice plane. I did a bit of CAD work on this plane but had to stop until I got to know how to make the airfoils to cater for the mid-wing saw tooth. Also I noticed that the wings had a drooped leading edge which should not be a problem making it on Compufoil. I reckon that the elevator stab has to be an all-moving type. Anyway, I hope to get back to it when I have a bit more free time. Reuben |
RE: Super Etendard
Here is the correct answer:
The Super Etendard has a full flying stab and the two small elevator flap go up when the wing flaps go down to compensate for the induced pitch down so simple! :D |

taking a breaking from the sanding, thought I would snap a few quick pics.
what do you think? Starting to look like something :D |
RE: Super Etendard
Nice! What is that - florist foam?
|
RE: Super Etendard
yeah its great stuff, super easy to carve and sand.
plus it's on sale at Micheals! lol |
RE: Super Etendard
I saw the stuff at Michael's and thought the same thing....perfect for making plugs! What did you use to glue the pieces together that sands easily?
I'm still waiting to hear from my Super-E pilot friend. He's been in training and out of touch. Tom |
RE: Super Etendard
i just some elmurs wood glue, just a tiny bit to stick the parts together before sanding.
I'm about have way down one side of the fuse now. Made a few new formers with standoffs to position the wing root location. I planned on getting alot done this coming week, but now I have to go out of the country for work so I'm getting behind! |
