RE: Pulse jets WOW factor!!
ORIGINAL: cstatman Mark Pauline of "Survival Research Laboratories" builds all sorts of outrageous bits, and has a hovercraft with pulsejets for direction and thrust. Seeing this thing in person is an amazing experience. But his jets are HUGE, way too large for planes, although he does seem to have the throttling worked out. Link to Hovercraft pix: http://www.srl.org/machines/hovercraft/ Link to Pulse Jet testing Videos: http://www.srl.org/yard/pulse/ http://aardvark.co.nz/pjet/ I've just been testing the new 200-lbs-thrust valveless engine with fairly spectacular results ;-) That thing is so loud, and the frequency so low, that regular hearing protection doesn't help much -- it's still painfully loud with Grade 5 hearing protection muffs *and* ear-plugs. I demonstrated it to a group who attended an R/C turbine fly-in a couple of weeks ago and they were suitably impressed (and somewhat shocked). |
