Inexpensive Paint?

I am finishing a new jet. I plan on covering the wings and stab but need to paint the fuselage and booms. I used PPG on a Bobcat I built but was wondering if there was anything else that might work as well? I have noticed from my other jets that they rarely get any fuel on them. PPG is also hard to get in small quantities. If I could use some inexpensive primer and base coat I could clear coat that with PPG to protect it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Model master??????? Even comes in Federal Standard colors. Expensice in those small bottles but is still less than PPG or DuPont.

Huh?? 1/4 oz. bottles of paint for $2.00?? PPG Shopline urethane basecoat (JB) sells over the counter for $19.29 per pint. That works out to 1.21 per ounce or .31 in the equivalent size model paint jar. I haven't seen model paint that cheap since I the early 70's.

Not really. Have you used Radio SOuth before:

They sell the PPG paints in as small as 4 oz quantities. You can order online and they ship very quickly if you're looking for a standard color (they stock colors that match Monokote colors).

Use Shopline (what used to be Omni) from PPG then use whatever clear you want. A pint in most colors is less than $20. Reds may be a little higher.

I used regular exterior semi gloss house paint thinned 50%...total cost $9 per color for a qt and you can paint 3 planes with 1 qt! You can also get it color matched to whatever color you want AND its fuel proof.

That sounds interesting. What do you thin it with and what about a primer? Would I need to clear coat it if you want a high gloss finish? I assume I could spray it?

Bob

Do you know where I can order Shopline if I decide to use it?

Thanks for the help guys. I'm not much of a paint expert.

Shopline is sold at automotive paint stores that sell PPG paint. You buy it base coat/ clear coat or single stage. In single stage you do not need to use clear coat.

Hi Hal

I have used Latex exterior paint on many jets with good results. I followed Roy Vallincorts article in Model Airplane News. If you look around you might be able to find it on the web. The finish is great for scale camo birds, but for high gloss sport layout's you just can't beat good auto paint.

I tried an all water based finish using latex as a base coat, and Future floor acrylic floor finish as the clear. It worked ok and looked ok from 3 feet, but it is very difficult to get an auto type finish this way.

I just learned this last night. there is a local automotive paint supplier that stocks paint that has been returned becasue of poor color match, etc.....they put it in a bin and sell it for like $5 a quart. I'm talking about PPG Concept, Chroma Base, Nason-----all the good stuff. See if you can find a place like this.

The con, you may not find the color you are looking for.

We probably make somewhere around 400-500 spray cans a month where I work. I've seen some very good results with cans so hold your head up high Shaun.

:D Good point, Shaun!

I reconn the most is being lost in tecniques of the air-brush results... There would be hard to beat this tool, but we have other options. ;)
Add SOME paint on your finger, and gently apply it on a sample first, to se the result. Work on it before it dries..
The exhaust of a GPU ie, can be very convincing.

A simple spray can be made at your spesific colour, and there is no need to be scared to try it.....[8D]
I have done this alot, and works for me...

We prefer Rustoleum !

Shaun

I wondered about Krylon or Rustoleum. Is it fuel proof? If not, could I put a clear coat on it?

Thanks.

Rustoleum non-metallic colors are fuelproof. Krylon is not. I've put Lustercoat clear over Krylon and that works. Lustercoat is a polyurethane, not sure if other clears work.
