Jet Storm Seam Issues.....

1 Attachment(s)
I had wanted to get a Hotspot and have been unable to find a new one so I decided to look at the Jet Storm. It flew great and look like it would make a great weekend flyer, so I bought the Jet Storm at FJIR. They did not have a manual but said they would email it so no problem, I have the experience to build a jet without the manual so I went forward and built the jet, it’s pretty straight forward. After building this jet she was ready for flight, But I decided to give it another once over inspection and found that the seams are opened up along the fuse leading edge. Now if I was to fly this plane, I am sure this would have ended in tragedy and would have questioned myself why my plain came apart in the air. Well I think all the experience I have gained here on RCU helped me and helped me not lose this bird on her maiden due to seams. I suggest that everyone look over there ARFS with great interest for possible issues. Although I bought this from Modellbau issues like this will keep me from buying another ARF kit from them. NOW Does anyone have the CG for this plane, because it’s not in there manual nor are the recommended throughs, I called down there and the lady said that’s what the manufacture sends them so that’s what you get, that was really helpful.

David

Just had a look for you on the Aviation Design website, they are selling the Storm in Europe. Unfortunately no instructions on the website yet so I can't help with the CG.

David, here is Altecare site and they sell the storm. There is a manual there too. Looks like you did a fine job on your plane. I'd love to fly a storm someday.
Good eye on the bad seams. How are you going to fix those?

It tells you exactly where the CG is, http://www.altecare.com/stormmanual.pdf

Goekeli, Oh I just fixed the seams. I opened them up about 2mm and filled with Hysol there is a 1" cloth behind the leading edge so I filled it until it pored back out and wiped smooth, This should work.

Nice job David! You are welcome, just having fun. I have been interested in this model for some time. Here is from the manual
Note : balance the model with the gear down and the tanks empty.
The center of gravity (CG) must be located at 130mm rear of the wing leading edge (wing root)
You must check it before the first flight, to do this with the aircraft in flight condition but without fuel
lift the aircraft in this point, the aircraft must adopt a slightly nose down attitude. If it is horizontal or
the tail drops move the baterie forward or add weight in the nose.
In other hand if the nose drops considerably add weight in the tail.

David if you could, please give me approximate measurements of the fuel tank, and also if you have a scale or one you could use, the AUW with fuel in the UAT would be apreciated. What engine are you using?

Joe :D

RE: Jet Storm Seam Issues.....

Well I just weighed it and it came to 21lbs with the UAT tank full and main tanks empty. The fuel tank I used is the on on modellbau web site http://www.modellbau-usa.com/catalog...products_id=39 I checked the capacity and it only holds 74 oz so I added the 2 sulliven 11oz poly tanks so I have 96 oz of fuel and a 4 oz bvm UAT tank. so I should be good for fuel. The Turbine I decided to use is the new Simjet 2200, it puts out 22lbs of thrust at 120K and I have tested and verfied that. so it should scoot along really good..

David,
I know the guys all set the CG on the Storms here using a digital postal scale (they always borrow mine) About $50 from Sam's Club.
They set the mains on something about the same height as the scale (usually two ECU terminals) and the nose on the scale and balance until XXX pounds is shown on the scale. I want to say it is either 2.0 or 2.1 pounds but I have to ask someone to get you the right number. If the CG is off the Storm bounces like a bad kangaroo on landing. When its right they just roll on. I think I heard Alberto is out of the country, not sure if he is back. If you can get ahold of him at Modellbau he knows the right weight. I will try to reach my friends tomorrow and get you the right information. They probably have the most flights on the Storms. I remember seeing one with the same type of seam problem but I vaguely remember the way the wing is assembled I am not sure they bothered to fill it since it is solid. Its been awhile so I may be wrong on that.
I will see if I can get you some help. I will PM you a phone number if its okay with my friend. He can probably fill in the blanks from the manual for you with his personal experience with the Storm.

Hello. I have interest in Storm Jet. Could you give me your impressions regarding the airplane and how it flies. Is it a good second jet. It handles like a Rookie. Any feedback is of great value. Regards

RE: Jet Storm Seam Issues.....

The Jet flys great it handles like a very stable trainer in the air. The only thing I do not like is the landing of this jet. You have to grease every landing or its a hoppity, hoppity down the runway. I would say it flys like a Kangaroo or original rookie. I am getting ready to set up canards on mine to work that part out. Also I have the simjet 2200 in mine and it is lighting fast, I bet it does every bit of 200MPH, I normaly fly at half throttle or less. This is a very clean airframe and she does not like to slow down for landings so you have to setup your landings right.

Also the Plus to this jet is all the working room you have in it. There is pleny of space to put both arms in to do what ever you need. Its a great all around flyer. If you need any more info let me know...
