smoke
Hi Guys
Just wondering what fuel guys are using for smoke systems, is straight deisel a good choice ? My local hobby shop can order it in at $22 a gallon ,I have a 32oz tank and I can't see it lasting very long Thanks Ted |

RE: smoke
I suggest you buy the 5 gallon jug of the above stuff from tower. Great stuff, doesn't attack wood or foam (ET, maybe you can put smoke in some of your airplanes!;) )
Also, I've switched to the slimline smoke pump. Lots-o-smoke=Lots-o-smiles!!:D Raf |
RE: smoke
cheapest most dense smoke I've found is from pure paraffin oil (lamp oil) you can get it by the gallon at Lowes for 3 bucks. I've used it in gassers too for years with no problems.

You know, incase some spills in the car, storage, etc. How about attacking wood, glue, paint, etc...? Raf |
RE: smoke
it does have sorta the same smell as the Kero, but not as strong, but the density of the smoke is wonderful.

does the lamp oil produce a consistent thickness of smoke at all speeds? I've been mixing diesel w/ concrete cutting oil 50:50 good value but mixed results. it smokes best at low speeds but dissipates easily at moderate speeds. I'm thinking of switching back to Super Dri @ $3 a pop can't beat that bargain for lamp oil and it's located just down the street thanks buck |

RE: smoke
diesel always has very lacking density and it has hardly any lingering time, the lamp oil is on par with the MDW Aviation Super Dri, it's the same thing, the MDW is just a 'deodorized' version (like unscented baby oil which also does an excellent job but isn't as cheap as the lamp oil). i used to use 3/4 gallon of diesel and a quart of automatic transmission fluid, smokes great but has an awful smell when burnt, I've played with hundreds of the 'Home Made' mixes and the lamp oil always gave the best results for density and longevity at the cheapest price.

Super Dri !!
This year I am going to put a second injector tube in...... |
RE: smoke
never had a single problem with it in a DuBro tank with a gas stopper and tygon tubing. i use both SkyWriter and the Tam Graupner 400 pumps.
just an FYI, smoke is generated by vaporizing the oil, not by burning it. the point where you inject it into the jet blast plays a key roll in how well it smokes, if you get it in to close you'll burn it and get a flame out the tail, to far out and you get allot of residue in your pipe. you can play with it to get the best performance out of your oil. when i was testing different formulas what i did was took a soup can and sat it on a small flame and added the oil of choice and allow it to boil, there will be NO SMOKE, add a small tube down into the can with a small air supply (regulated off my compressor) and the smoke floods out. i have even added candle oil scent to the mix and you can smell it in the air when burning it, I've had the best results here with 'Red Hot Cinnamon'. also baby oil and mineral oil also do allot better then the diesel mixes and can be found regularly, some places the lamp oil is seasonal. kc |
RE: smoke
Hi
About smoke: Did anyone use the smoke chemical used in night clubs, pop concerts etc?... This chemical is based on Diethyleneglycol, glyceryn etc.. and should give good results.. These are not flammable and non-corrosive... |
RE: smoke
the in house smoke fluids are very costly because they are designed for indoor use with reduce smell/CO2/C2O/etc..... they are also made to be quick in dispersement and have no lingering when outside in 'free air'

RE: smoke
Bukyem, I have been down that route, and bought a gallon of the stuff. The results were ok, but nothing like was expecting. To be ownest I had better results with deisel. Now I am stuck with the stuff, so if you know of any budding disc Jockeys out there:D I think the super dry or lamp oil is the way to go... Ian |
RE: smoke
Has anybody tried form oil. I believe construction companies use it for concrete work. I was told that it smokes pretty good but have never tried it myself. I did call a construction supply company a while back and if I remember right it is not that expensive.

RE: smoke
I've tried form oil from Home Depot. Around $25 plus tax at Home Depot. Too thick to use without mixing with diesel. Tried that in various ratio's from 50-50 to mostly diesel. Same thing for transmission fluid. IMO diesel works just as good by itself without the additives. Plus way easier to just go fill the jug at the gas station. Looks good until you're up with a guy using Super Dri on a good set up.

RE: smoke
currently my smoke oil has Juniper Breeze scent in it, i don't own any Apple Cobbler or I'd be willing to try it. it makes any spills have a much less petroleum smell. and the scent of the flight line after a low pass down the runway with smoke on is rather pleasing as well.
kc EDIT: i guess if you live in swamp land you could add citronella to it and rid yourself of the mosquitoes while flying. |
