RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

Hey,

Yes, Idid major mods to the airframe. Fuselage, wings, booms and horizontal stab have major mods and changes. I sanded the entire inside of the fuse and added another layer of fiberglass.....much stiffer. The horizontal stab has a semetrical airfoil.....not flat bottom. Booms are glaased with Carbon for a very stiff structure. I cut the heavy block off on therear of the fuselage because the turbine will be mounted to the wings.....like the BVM Bobcat. All carbon where the engine will be mounted to the wings.....major modification. I have a 1.2 inch Carbon wingtube in place of the weak stock one....it is also 5 inches longer on eachside of the wing. Madeall new formers for the fuse. Awesome custom carbon fiber/plycanopy rail for the canopy. Highly modified landing gear mounts.....10 times stronger than stock. Modified the entire inside wing structure......15 times stronger than stock. The plane will also have flex composite hinges for all control surfaces....gapless hinges. Plus many more mods !!!!!! I should have the fuel cells done next week. I will post photos of all my work very soon!!!! This will be an awesome plane for very little money. I think I will power iit with a P120.

My dad had some very good flights with his Falcon at the Weston Park show this weekend.

He decided to do something to the rudders during the week. I think it looks great!

Derrick,

Sounds like your Falcon is now bullet proof with all those mods. Problem you have is it is still a Falcon 120. Chuncky vertually flat bottom wing section, annoying to assemble and dismantle and reasonably old technology in design aerodynamically. The good news is it flies great for what it is. I like flying mine with a 20 pound turbine!! The airframe has a critical VNEand top speed however as pushed to its limits drag outweighs power/thrust and it will only go so fast!!! IMO a P120 is to heavy and thursty for the Falcon and would be better suited to a Bandit or similar.

At the end of the day this hobby is about having fun so good luck with your falcon!

Hey guys I know this is a bit off topic but 3 of us Falcon drivers are from the Woodland Club and are on here quite a bit, and we have 2 more in the works. So I thought I would share this link with you all we are looking for some help. Please take a look, post and pass the word around RCU as much as possible. Thanks Forrest

I will post pictures of the fuel cells tomorrow. I spent all weekend working on the molds and plugs. 2- 22oz conformal wing tanks and 1-65oz conformal fuse tank.

Falcon 120 fuel cells

Hand laid Fiberglass and West Systems Epoxy.

130oz. total capacity

let me know if anyone wants a set?

Price somewhere around $160/set....no fittings.

This should give 12+ minute flight times with a P80.

Wing tanks fit with very little modification !

Well Done on those Tanks Good looking and Strong...
not to rain on your parade but im making an injection mould of the same kinda thing I will be using standard PET bullets and blowing tanks with those....somewhat cheaper (especially for us out here in the OUTBACKS of Australia with the everchanging exchange rate!)
kinda puts those excellent tanks way out of our reach especially with postage...ends up around the $250..(without fittings of course)for tanks.....hmmmm pity as the are good! kinda quality that you find in the upmarket jet kits really!

WELL DONE!...but way outa my falcons price range

cheers

How much does the center tank hold? I'm planning on a Super Bee so I don't need that much fuel.

Question about the flaps, when deployed does the nose pitch up or pitch down? Just trying to figure out what Flap-Elevator mix i'll need.

Thanks,
Todd

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

Flap deployed nose pitch up. You need a few mm of down elevator. You will get it perfect after a few flights! Good luck.

Center Tank is about 85oz.
In post # 2700 you said the fuse (center) tank was 65 oz. Which is correct?

derrickxp8103 07-02-2009 12:46 PM

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

The Main tank is @85oz

The two wing tanks are @20oz each

Measured Last night.

The previous measurements were an estimate before I had the main tank done.

Thanks,
Derrick

BTW.....BVM tank fittings in the picture are kind of expensive......around $20 each....but they are nice.

Derrick how far aft does the main tank go? I ask since my turbine has a separate oil tank and that is in the far aft end of the fuse.

derrickxp8103 07-02-2009 06:39 PM

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

Launch Pad,

The tank will slide all the way to the rear former.....but it can installed about 4 inches or so in front of that former.

Thanks,
Derrick

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

I know the current topic is tanks, however;

Is anyone flying their Falcon using a 20mm OD carbon fibre wing spare??? I have found a supplier that has 20mm OD and 17 mm inside diam?

Would this be strong enough???

Currently using alum spare with wood dowel insert which is quite heavy!!!!!

Comments please?????

Mav:)

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

I rebuilt the whole wing and using a 1.25 inch carbon rod...I will post pics tonight.

I think carbon would be stronger than the cheap china aluminum stock tube.

Derrick,

That looks strong. 1.25 inch is much thicker than 20mm. I am concerned a 20mm OD carbon rod ould not be up t the task!!!

Just a question, where does your tanks vent? cant see any connection for that. Besides that.... awsome tanks!!

figueroa 07-03-2009 10:35 AM

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

Derrick,
Great job on the tanks . I was wondering where the vents were too.
From the anount of Falcon 120s out there you should sell a ton of them.
I can't believe the amount of hits on this thread.
Good luck .

derrickxp8103 07-03-2009 06:52 PM

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet

Vents can pretty much go anywhere there is room......very easy !!!
