p-70 ingested something. please look

1 Attachment(s)
not sure where to post, in jetcat support or here. So, here it goes.

Before I went to fly this Saturday after my preflight inspection I noticed the blades on the intake must of ingested something earlier.

I didnt start it after I noticed it. Although the rotating assembly turns fine by hand without any roughness.

Should I send it in to have it gone through? What should I do? I have it in a baby boomerang and am not using a fod screen.

Please look at the pictures and advise.

Thanks,
Larry

Just looks like compressor wheel balancing.

Oh, now i see some dents on blades.

Start it on manual propane with the fuel valve off, put a nut driver on the case and feel for vibration.

Then use your own judgement.

When it doubt, I always send in for a professional opinion. No sense in breaking something and spending BIG bucks!

No FOD screen is no good....

Compressor is hooped, you will need a new one,,,there may be further damage downstream...what ever went through it, and the debris from the blades had to go somewhere....

Send it in.......

I posted in the jetcat forum for you.

I will say to start it up and run it on just propane isn't the best thing here. With the starter motor turning you are sure to feel vibration. Send it in.

I wouldn't run an out of balance ompressor.
The least it will do is to kill your bearings in a very short time.
Send it in.

Boomerang always had done a lot of damage to engine running without FOD screen. There is too much loose stuff in the wood fuselage.
Send the engine back and get the FOD put it in before running again in the Boomerang.

Has anyone noticed any performance change on P70 with FOD screen?

No, we never fly without one to tell the different.:D

Per Bob Wilcox
There is a perfomance difference but not enough to make a difference.
I for one found out that there is an obvious performance difference on the Wallet though as
compresoors are not cheap.

I have a p-70 on my baby boomer. I flew without a fod screen for 50 flights. Later, I added a FOD screen without any noticable performance difference.

i have just installed a p70 in a bandit arf...and i think the bypass is quite narrow for a FOD screen. Is it a good idea to put 2 screen on the intake instead? Does that make a major difference in the intake volume?

Guys, put a fod screen on your engine! Ingesting one bug at any speed will cost you $800.00.

The guys at Jetcat don't care if you have one or not, get it! None of the manufactureres do.

But they do sell it.

On any of the engines there is a minor penalty for using it.

What's more important to you? Going one mile an hour faster? Or saving $800.00?

Make the decision and quite asking about FOD screens, it's boring.

None of the manufacturers care? Not true! Every single engine leaves our factory with one of these fitted as standard - no flour sifters or sink drainers for us.

Sara, please, if you have a customer take that off and they ingest something, are you suggesting that your office will send the business elsewhere?

That's what I mean about caring.

I just don't understand why this still get debated here, if there is something more to learn about FOD screens, I'm all ears.

WrenTurbines 06-05-2007 08:19 AM

RE: p-70 ingested something. please look

Sorry, Sean, I don't quite understand you. All our engines now have a starter mounting which is specially designed to hold the FOD screen mesh. If a customer was operating without the FOD screen he'd have to take the starter motor off as well - unless he ripped the mesh out of the holder, which would seem an odd thing to do - so it's most unlikely that any recent Wren would be operated without a FOD screen.

We do, however, have older engines out there with the pod-on-legs style of starter, and we will repair them if they have a FOD problem - or any other problem.

You said that manufacturers don't care whether you get FOD or not. That isn't true, we do care, as witness the fact that we have a properly designed screen fitted as standard to all current engines.

Well, maybe it's time the other manufacturers step up to the plate as you guys have?

RE: p-70 ingested something. please look

The fod screen does a great job at keeping out the big stuff, however, it is the fine dirt that really is the evil here. Try and not become careless because you run a screen. Dirty or dusty conditions on runways can eat away at these turbines, shortning the life of the bearings, FOD screen or not..

I think you are quite right, Sean. As a matter of fact, when we started making the FOD screens back in 2004 we thought everyone else would follow us - and we're surprised that they haven't. We think the after-market screens look very homemade compared with our design, but perhaps our competitors are trying to pick up more money by selling these as "extras" - or perhaps they are hoping for more FOD damage repairs?

I didn't realise that. I assumed that JetCat provided SOMETHING ... but obviously not. Good job Tam has spotted the gap in the market and filled it!
