Which Hawk?

I am thinking about purchasing a Hawk for my Wren XL200, I would like some subjective advice on three makers:-
1 GRAUPNER (As far as I am aware not released, and the most expensive)
2 FEI BAO HAWK
3 SKYMASTER
Any pro's and con's ?
Thanks
Tony

RE: Which Hawk?

For the 200 I think you should go Skygate or Airworld!

I would imagine the 200 is too big for the skymaster or Fei bao both dimensionally and thrust wise? Don't forget the thrust at idle will be higher so your landing speeds will be that much greater on the smaller models.

Seeing the Graupner Hawk is made by Skygate...

Also It's expensive...like the Skygate Hawk because it's fabricated...a Week to get it ready to paint!

The Graupner Hawk should be ready in a month...finally

RE: Which Hawk?

I have been led to believe that the idle thrust of the XL200 is relativaly low,
and as far as the Skygate or the Airworld one's I think they may just be a bit out out of my price range!
Thanks for your replies, please keep them coming.

LOL - I love your username Dropt McGutz ! Wonder how many people understand it, given that the expression isn't exactly well known in places like the US.

Thank you Gordon
I guess you're right, you're the first person that's commented but haven't been on here all that long........
Have a good day

I think the XL200 will have too much power for the Skyamster Hawk. You could lower the max RPM but you would have to check the idle thrust to see if it will work.

Well I see guys have fitted Jetcat 160's in that size hawk and that has more thrust than the Wren,
The 200 is not Newtons by the way
its 15kgs/33lbs
in case there was any confusion

RE: Which Hawk?

Have you checked the diameter limitations of these models? I know the XL is very short but it is also much larger in diameter? A deciding factor maybe?

Mark

Hi Mark
I saw you at the Bickley jet meet when you took your Hawk there, it is a big plane but its about 40 lbs in weight or there abouts.
I would have great difficulty in transporting something that big around.
I have been told that, some guys have fitted Jetcat 160 in the feibao hawk which is more powerful than the wren I am not sure of the dimensions of the 160, but it shouln't be too hard to find out.

RE: Which Hawk?

The XL200 is not much larger in diameter than the P160 - the difference is only 8mm. The P160 is 112mm and the XL200 is 120mm.

I think that because the XL200 is so short, compared with other engines, it gives the impression of being very wide.

Hi Tony,

So far I have actually found the Skygate Hawk the easiest of my models to transport!!!! The fuse splits in two so, depsite it's size, it simply fits in the boot with the seats down! :)

The P160 is, I believe, 108mm dia. whilst the XL200 is 120mm dia. - check the space between the rails etc?

Rgds,
Mark

PS Must remember the 200 is not 200N!!

RE: Which Hawk?

120mm is not a problem for the Fei bao Hawk, plenty of space on the rails, it would need a little fettling of the bearer, but would leave plenty of meat left to mount the turbine.

The external quality of the Fei Bao hawk is excellent, and the build quality is quite good, just need to go through it to make sure everything is glued well, and change the elevator bearings.

The problem i've found is getting information and setup details for the model.

I'll let you know how they fly this w/end when I give mine the big maiden!!

Yes, you may also fit the Wren in the Skymaster Hawk, you will probably have to lower the max thrust to fly it a normal speed, or you will have a rocket...:D The Hawk fly's great with about 20lbs of thrust, so with 33lbs you can imagine...[X(]
We just got two hawks here last week. The new version is perfect...;)

Here are some pictures of the Fei Bao Hawk engine bay, may be this can help you. You can always reduce the thrust to 25#s and the fuel economy should be better than a P-80, the reason been that you need less throttle because the higer thrust at lower throttle stick position.
