Chippy Ho Part Deux

1 Attachment(s)
Here's my second Chippy Ho!! See Dom, now I can't live without one! :D

This one's from Jet Legend. Its coming along just nicely.

Servo's in, gear in, doors on (Mike Lin did these two things, niiiicceee) hinged, horns on, airbrake and canopy on!

I've started the smoke system (with functional BVM centerline smoke tank ;) ) and various other component installs.

I'll share some pics.

Very Nice Chippy-Ho. I got an F-16 painted in the 'Ace in the Hole" scheme from Mike Lin and it is fantastic. I also had him install the gear doors and cylinders. That saved me a bunch of time.

Hi Raf,
If it is not too much trouble, could you please post some pictures of the factory gear door installation on your F18. I recently received my JL F18 from Monica at CamLex. Since there are no instructions or B/P (she is trying to get me a B/P) included, she told me to check out threads from ravill for building tips. I purchased the Blue Angel. Been in love with them ever since I saw them perform at Moffett Field when I was a little kid.
Thanks for your time Raf.

Wayne,

Dom (aka Maj. Woody) also has a SM f-18 that he has alot of pics on the gear doors. If I remember, I'll post some pics of the gear doors for ya! Remember SM/FB/X-treme/JL all, pretty much, have the same F-18C.

Here's Dom's build.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_50...tm.htm#5055313

What is B/p? Building Plans? Well, I got them from JL and they show the old F-18 from SM with the aluminum spars. The gear doors are definetely the hardest....

Ask away! :D

Hi Raf,
Thanks for the information about Dom's build. Sorry about B/P, it's a Blue Print. I retired from Lockheed and I guess I still have their language embedded in my brain. Those thoughts are slowly fading the longer I am away from them. Anyway, I really appreciate you taking the time to help.
Here is a picture of my new baby.
Take care and keep in touch.

Raf,
Sorry, I don't mean to get off the subject of that gorgeous Chippy Ho but I just had a question.
As far as the stroke of the gear door air cylinders, I planned on using 1" stroke on all gear doors, I was told I can use 5/8" stroke air cylinders. Is it just a matter of where you mount the cylinder to accommodate the stroke?
Thanks,

Wayne

RE: Chippy Ho Part Deux

I think we should have Dom coment on the gear door lengths. I put the cylinders on my first chippy ho, and I just asked Tam to give the correct lengths for the cylinders.

I'm sure if you give him a quick call, he'll be more than happy that question for you.

If I remember correctly though, I think 5/8's are probably alright for the three nose doors and the inner main doors. The outer and the big main doors need a longer stroke, mainly because of the mounting geometry is kinda tight back there with the business end of the turbine living in the same vicinity.

Nice pic. I love that Hornet.

Wayne,

I also just noticed that you live in milpitas. I live right up the road, Redwood city. You should stop by Tam's and just pick up the cylinders, all tallied, they'll set you back about $100. That'll be the cheapest things on that jet! :)

Also, when you're ready to maiden lets do it!

Hi Raf,
I got in touch with Tam, like you suggested, and he gave me the information I needed. He responded back in about an hour. He is right on top of it. Anyway, it will be awhile before this blue monster is ready to maiden. If I am not being too bold, it would be great if you could take it up for it's maiden. With your experience with jets and especially F18s, I can't think of anyone else more qualified.
Thanks Raf,

Wayne

I'm flattered! [sm=angel_smile.gif]

I can think of a few better qualified. :D

Dave Presta is the best, most consistent (ie, I've never seen him mess up, ever, but I've seen some of the jets he flies suffer from mechanical probs, but we all have that) "jet lander" I've ever seen.

That said, I'm sure we can maiden your jet w/o any problems with a safe and thorough preflight check! It'll fly great! [sm=thumbup.gif]

Here's some more pics.

Got the drop tank on.

I also used the BVM fuel connectors, very trick.

Here are some problems. The jet legend gear door cylinders, for lack of a better word, suck. The thread just slipped off, necessitating CA on the cylinders themselves. Ok, fixable.

BUT the worst is that they are intermitant at holding air. They hold air, sometimes, for days then, sometimes, for only minutes. I found one cylinder that did this worse than all the rest and replaced it. I'll have to email Mike Lin about that.

I think I'll have to use Tam's failsafe unit, 'cause although I pride myself in meticulous gear discpline and maintainance, I just don't trust these cylinders. It would be a huge pain in the but to replace them all right now, but just might!![:@]
