Today at Wrens open day they Unveiled there new engine.

specs:
lenght 260mm from tip of tailcone to front of starter
dia 110mm
weight 1480g
power min 15kg

comes with usual fod screen and starter, will be available in kit form or pre-built at the end of september 2008 approx.
price T.B.A

i was lucky enough to have a play with the engine running, the throttle respose was quick from idle to max rpm
decellaration was allso rapid.

No, it's not the 54 Mk4, Mark! It doesn't have an official name yet but it's a derivation of the XL200. It was intended as a 28 pound, 120-type engine to fill the gap in our range between the SuperSport and XL200 but it's gone over the spec - though you could always turn it down ...

I don't think so. The MK IV is 14.5 lbs or 6.5 KG. This motor is 33 LBS. It sounds like a kit version of the XL 200............

EDIT: Wow Sara, you beat me to it again.......Shouldn't you be serving cakes right now???:D

Things just didn't seem to add up ! The only new engine I had heard of was the Mark 4 and I thought some figures were wrong . Wow , smaller than the XL but the same thrust ! I just came back from Capitol Jets where I was running 5 Wrens . XL200 , Supersport , 2 44's and the 44TP . Lots of " Hey what do you have in that thing ? It really goes " ! Congrats on the new design !

A footnote, everybody:

The 1st factory produced kit-build turbine in it's class (33 lb/ 15kg thrust), only the 2nd after the hightly successful MW 54 Mk3 kit. Now the 'other' manufacturers, with Wren's expertise at illustrating and simplifying assembly and the right kit price, are really going to feel the competition. Congratulations to a first class company!

Come on Sara, we need a name for it!

One of the reasons I have not replaced any of my 15kg Brand X flame-out, seize-up specials with the XL-200 is that 120mm case diameter. All of my mid-size birds are set up with the standard 110mm KJ-66 diameter cases and too much hassle to change them and shoe-horn in the larger case.

Now Wren has really hit on a winner. 110mm, 15kg, and kit-build option.

My SS has been flawless and the MK III-kit went together easily in about 6 hrs. Watching my buddy Larry T. put flight after flight on his 44's reflect the quality of the Wren product.

I love my xl 200
but when are we going to be able to turn it up
they really should make 40lbs

Actually a short and fat engine should be more efficient. (which I believe the XL200 is)

Thrust is dependent on massflow. For that reason inlet diameter is a good indicator of thrust.

WOW Wren have done it again . Now i feel a complete Pillock for starting my XL200 thread. However I have to admit I am more than slightly curious what Wren are going to do with the XL200 now they have effectively made it obsolete.

We are still supporting the XL200 with parts and service, and I hope that at some time in the future the XL200 will be developed into a more powerful engine, which is what we intended from the outset - that's why it had the larger diameter. However, there are a lot of things happening here at the moment, not just the new jet engine but turboprops and helicopters, so the XL200 development will have to wait for a while.

Yes, the kerostart is still under test - we are flying the 44 turboprop and heli prototypes with it - but we are still not 100% happy with all aspects of it. We are making headway, but progress has been slow because we are concerned about reliability and don't want to use the customers' engines as a test-bed, we prefer to use the company engines.

Ron Ballard needs to give you the answer to that. He's on a plane on the way back to the USA right now - we've had a wonderful week with him working alongside the Wren team here and are all sorry to see him go. As you would expect, we discussed the prices whilst he was here and I don't want to make the announcement without consulting him.

Now that they have announced the prices for USA for the new turbine when are they going to be announced in the UK? Also out of curiosity does this mean that Wren are going to start manufacturing there own compressors now?

The UK price will be £2199 for the built engine and an amazing £1999 for the kit, including VAT. The UK and US basic retail prices are virtually the same but unfortunately we have to put VAT on top in the UK and Europe. Nevertheless, having looked at the prices other manufacturers' engines are selling for in the UK, I think it's very competitive.
