AMT BA's Concorde

1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone know if this beautiful Concorde is still around or it's current status?, as far i knew it was beyond the weight limits in US and therefore was not flown but then i could be wrong to as waivers could be achieved through ministry of transport.

Last i saw it's pictures were at Toledo show and few at one of the events on its own stand. I will appreciate if someone can provide its current information and also if owner could be contacted.

I believe this was be best RC Concorde built so far...

Sorry for quality of this picture, it's saved as .BMP file on cd and i can't change it to JPG, so i took this picture of it now and posted here.

If it went to the new owners in Cincy it's probably been sold to raise money. I would guess that they, and their parent company are about out of business by now.

It's still in West Virginia with Jim Weigle. It was not part of the deal.

Diceman,

I am sure that Lewis is correct and Cincinnati did not get the Concorde in the deal, I was told that it would never be flown; I do not remember the reason.

I do not think that US Microjet or General Tool are going out of business anytime soon. I talked to Russ this afternoon we talked about the progress they are making with the business and he gave me the link to the new front page of the website that is still under development. They are continuing to develop the engines and support equipment. I have been an AMT customer since 1998 and I have a personal interest in seeing them succeed in the hobby arena.

I agree that the company has suffered some set backs, but I think that they have turned it around and they will continue to improve their products for hobby commercial and military customers.

One of the reasons is that its outside the limit of the AMA experimental category for jets - which is 75 lbs max, wet. I believe that I heard somewhere that the AMT Concord (which is *much* bigger than the model by Michael from Germany which I think the model above is) tops the scales at over 100 lbs dry...

It can't be flown, because it's about 250 to 300 pounds wet. It still looks great, but Jim has lost some interest in it now. No matter, I still wish it was in my garage. Dorothy's car could sit in the driveway.

Yeah...right! And maybe Dorthy thinks you could sleep in the car sitting in the driveway. [X(]

sell the plane to, england/germany or france and let it fly.

"Jim Weigle's Concorde
21' ft,186lbs, 170 lbs thrust, 800+ hours of build time"

RE: AMT BA's Concorde

That is a bit obsessive.

From what I can gather off the site, the German kit uses two 80 Newton turbines, definitely not as large or as heavy.

He should be able to get special approval from the FAA to fly 186 lbs if he can find insurance.
How else would all those companies developing big drones test their aircraft?

Props4ever 12-11-2008 09:30 AM

RE: AMT BA's Concorde

Now that is the most perfect and most beautiful RC Concorde ever produced!!, yikes it even have working scale thrust reversers also!!

So she is still alive, well i also think FAA could grant it a waiver but i have no idea what it will take to get it.

How come it's so heavy if someone can shed a light on it please. Thanks

ergocentric 12-11-2008 09:57 AM

RE: AMT BA's Concorde

Scale math by guessing:

Small (German kit) = two times 80 N
Large = twice the size or greater
Large = four times the weight or greater

so large is probably over 100 lbs of thrust, 170 lbs thrust for 186 lb plane sounds like a rocket.

170 lbs thrust would mean the majority of the frame wold have to be metal.

Unless Model Airplane News is wrong, the test flight was scheduled for 2001 (see May 2001, pg 32)

Seems it's composite: (Model Airplane News once again)

One of the more impressive models on display in Toledo was Jim Weigle's MIoscale, 21-foot-long Concorde. With an 8-foot wingspan, the 225-pound jet is powered by four AMT Olympus AT 450 turbines-each of which produces nearly 50 pounds of thrust! Jim designed the jet using a scale plastic model, then had fiberglass molds made to spec. With only the radio equipment and some hardware to install, the jet should be ready to fly soon; we'll keep you posted.

Then this was said about it couple days ago on other rc site which provoked me to ask if this Concorde is still alive or not. Or did it flew or not. It's clear now that its still around and haven't flown as yet from recent posts on this thread.

"The most expensive heartbreaker I know of is the guy who had the British Airways Concorde at Toledo 4 years ago with 4 turbines and a complete interior with cabin lights, retractable nose, expensive landing gear and it came with it's own trailer for hauling...the asking price was $85000 US and he huffed it in the ground three months later, and his wife left him over it...as reported the next year at Toledo....OUCH!!!

I got pics of it somewhere on a disk here...intact!!"

I remember this "story" but it was not associated with this jet (Jim's concorde).

Sean,

I thought it was this very Concorde as all that is said in that post i quoted matches the facts about this BA's Concorde except for flying and crashing part!.

Well if the story is true then if it's no this one then which one is it?, i mean it would be easy to find out as not many giant RC Concordes are flying now days worldwide...

See above statement. If the General says it's in West Virginia, it's in West Virginia.

Beyond that, I remember that story associated with some exotic prop airplane, I guess it's a snopes type story, change the airplane, "The guy lost everything, his girl, dog, lost his house, kids thought he was an ass" It's a fable to make you think twice about your hobby vs. your family.

Name the guy and give a phone number :D I don't think this actually happened, but I have been wrong a lot! [X(]
