Spool times....
Throughout my journey to learn about jets I have observed many different statements about many different engines.
I have, Through my own reaserch discovered the so called "name brand" turbines and why so many preffer these turbines. What I have not been able to do is piece together the abstractly presented information regarding spool times for different turbines. Heres my take, I feel that the acceleration time of an engine is relatively important. It is certainly important enough to be included in a list of pertinant specifications for that particular engine IMHO..... Why is it not? Personally, Id rather know the spool time of an engine as opposed to its EGT. But that's just me. From what I understand this far, Spool times vary DRAMATICALLY between different engines. I understand the P-80 takes some 9-10 seconds to reach full power. While a Falcon takes less than 3. This is such an important variable in the formula of deciding which engine to purchase, Why isn't it presented accordingly? Is their even a qualitative comparison of spool times between different engines? Is their anything that focuses on the spool times of diferent turbines? Am I just not looking hard enough? I'm fairly new to jets but I can tell you that my new Jetcat P80 spools from idle to full power in 4-5 seconds (timed on the ground) so not sure where you got that info from, Gary.

It all accords who you ask, those that own a particular turbine will tell you it spools up quicker than any specification suggests, one thing you can guarantee is that if it appears in a German specification every turbine will at least meet that specification if not better it, the reason is the trade descriptions act in Germany is very strict, advertised specifications must be achived at a minimum so they under specify to ensure compatabilty.
From my own experience the Graupner G Booster and JetCat SX turbines do spool up very quickly compared to others I have flown. Hope that helps Mike EDIT: The P80 will spool up in about 5-6 seconds as suggested 9-10 seconds is off the mark. |

My new P-80 starts to accelerate in 2 seconds and get full power in 3-4 seconds.

Pete737 must be talking about the older P80 and yes they do take 8 sec to spool up from idle so did the older P120, but since the jetcat updated to the SE that has all changed now... I have the Titan it takes about 4 to 5 sec to spool up. I have a simjet 3000 newer one and it takes about 3 - 4 sec to spool up. I have a new MW44 and it takes about 4-5 sec to pool, and now I have a Simjet nexus in route which I have heard has the fastest spool times, but I will see...

Yes, you are right! The new Jetcat turbines has a chip inside (as Jetcat claims) that is the same chip that the SE version has and thanks to this chip, the spool time of the new P-80 is max. 4 sec., but it start to spool from idle in just 2 sec.

Maybe but whatv I have read from Jetcat is that burner improvements was for SE turbines

The Jet Central Rabbit will go from idle to max thrust in less than 3 seconds - seen it - very fast response compared to my old Ram :D, which is not a very fair comparison. Gene |

I have a Behotec J66 and it is S L O W to spool, so slow that you need to decide on a go-around on the down wind leg. :D
That being said, slow spool is its only fault, other than that it has been a super power plant with 24+ hours on it now.... |

I think the P60 SE spools almost twice as fast as the regular P60's

I-Jets Black Mamba 2.5s to full throttle. Just tried it on mine. Awesome.

My Booster 130+ has insane spool time, I had to slow it down in the ecu just abit because it was so fast it would compressor stall because it couldn't pull enough air through the intakes fast enough... crazy, I think its around the 2.5 second range aswell..

Hi Pete,
we have a P-70, P-120 SE and WREN 54SS, well, the acceleration also depends on factors as temperature, but, the P70 speeds up in 4 the 5 s, but, the P-120 SE in 2 s approximately, but, remenber, in hight temperature the spool up is very slower, and the turbines like P-120 SE and SX are different than FALCON, but they are good engines. it also considers the attendance after sales for your decision, we have a great example of the JETCENTRAL in the RCU, ERC CLAP is a perfect seller!!!! hope help jose [8D] |

I know some guys think their engines spool really fast just by listening to them but for accuracy you need a stop watch and monitoring the ECU to get the true picture. It may sound like it's at full throttle and have quick response but the ECU will tell the story.

Or is it a physical issue like CC design? How can you tell? I guess that goes for all manufacturers that may claim their "newer" turbines accelerate faster. Pete |

Pete Jet Cat claims in their home page that SE turbines have some modifications in the electronics to get a faster spool time and they say that the new non SE turbines has the same electronics modifications (without combustion chamber modifications I think) of the SE version. Behotec J66 and it is SLOW to spool, so slow that you need to decide on a go-around on the down wind leg. If the engine is not spooling up that fast then it has to be investigated and repaired if necessary. I encourage you to return it for an inspection. regards Peter |

Being a rep,I will not say that a Simjet spools faster than any other particular turbine.I will say that the spool times are very quick.Also,the support and service you will receive from Kerry Sterner (USSimjet) is second to none.He is right here in Pa.Call me,and I might be able to get you an ALPA discount[8D],or Kerry if you have any questions. again...it also depends on which generation the turbine is.
My simjet 3000SP accalereates quite slow. But it is also a few years old now. |
