Which assembly stand do you use?
I'm fed up with resting my models on boxes or the grass to assemble my models at the field and think it is time I got a decent stand.
What are you guys using? Are there good ones available to buy or do you build your own? If building, do you have a generic one or a specific one for each model? Thanks, |

This is what I use. Make it as wide or narrow as needed.

RE: Which assembly stand do you use?
The Byron stands seem quite popular, but recently I've seen a number of people using keyboard stands, that are adjustable for height and support a model at a comfortable height to work on. I'm going to get one and see how it works out.

I have found that a BVM jet cradle is a GREAT Tool at least for BVM products . & a painters stand like Bob Covish shows work well.

The keyboard/harborfreight stands look ok but what happens if you need to turn the model upside down (e.g. to put the wings on)?
It doesn't look like they would hold the fuselage that well upside down. |

Slick, built one of these & had the plan published in a local mag.
Swap the foam inserts over to suit whatever model. http://users.bigpond.net.au/BAC/B-36_video_page_.html Look in the loading batteries & undercarriage check video. Originally it had 2 x side frames & folded flat diagonally, a shelf dropped down to hold it all square. Let me know if you want the plan & article. - John. |
RE: Which assembly stand do you use?
Midwest makes a good model stand too. P/N is 810...sorry I don't have a picture of one, but it is on page 17 of their catalog.
The price is about $40.00..... |
RE: Which assembly stand do you use?
I build a seperate (custom) stand for each jet out of PVC tubing and fittings that you get at Lowes or Home Depot. Many elbows, T's, corner pieces, etc, are available to make a stand that fits that particular jet exactly. Also, I don't bother using PVC cement/primer .... I just use thin Zap .... it flows into the joints nicely (you can't get the pieces apart if you tried). I then use the foam pipe insulation to cover the areas of the PVC that will topuch the airplane. Bob

RE: Which assembly stand do you use?
Dave, that looks good.
Does it fold up small enough for you to post? I may need a couple of other bits too so will send an email. Cheers, |
RE: Which assembly stand do you use?
I use a music stand from the argos catalogue (f15 for flying field and f16 with a board for workshop), Byron stand as Dave showed and I also made a stand out of pipe like Carlos for my F16 and jet provost at the flying field

I finished mine today. I used 1/2" electrical conduit. $1.95 for 10'. I used two pieces and I had two 10" pcs. left over. The self is storage rack I bought at Home Depot. it's 16 1/2" x 48". I cut it in half. It's enough for two stands.
It hold my 15lb Corsair and flight box.:D |
