AD Scorpion quick build thread
 

This is a very very quick build thread of the Aviation Design Scorpion.
This kit is a very quick build, should not take more than a 2 to 3 weeks to finish.
Specs: Span: 70” - Length: 83’’ - Weight: 27lbs dry.
This is the RedBull version with JR8411 throughout except for the stabs which use JR8611. Radio is Furaba FASST 2.4GHz, and turbine is Behotec JB180 Kero start.
Tank is Kevlar 4L and ECU battery is a 3 cell LiPo 5350mAh and Rx is 2 cell LiPo 4250mAh with regulator. Retracts are Behotec C36/2 with upgraded twin nose wheel strut.

No weight is needed in the nose, CG should be set at or around the main struts.

This is my 2nd Scorpion, the first was sold to a local flier who still enjoys flying it.
Test flight is scheduled for either tomorrow or in the coming week.

Test flew the Scorpion yesterday. No surprises, a solid plane, very stable and super fast.

I have a AD Scorpion (not a Super Scorpion) with a SimJet 2250 turbine. I need a bigger engine as we fly off grass and have decided to exchange it for a Nexus (16 kilo thrust).

I was afraid that I had to program the engine a bit down not to rip the model apart? Or does the model handle this kind of power with ease?

Hi Anderhau, I have a Black Mamba in mine wound up to about 14kg and it handles that no problems. I think you'll find no problems.

Looks nice! The Red Bull design is unique........a bereak from the norm. Where did you get the 4 liter tank from? Does it have a divider in it for smoke?

There is an option for both a 4L tank and a 3+1L tank so you can carry smoke.

I used the 4L tank as I like the longer flight times. [8D]

Oh OK. I thought it was a bigger tank cuz it looks like it extends through to the main former. Maybe I'll contact Gary Mueller about an extension. The tank I'm using now is the same dimensions as that on the website but there is room for about another 3-4" . I'm running a Titan and don't want to give up fuel capacity for smoke oil. Thanx for the info !

I have the same tank as the one shown in the pictures in the posts above and I don't think it could be made any bigger and still fit into the airframe. It is semi-oval shaped to match the former cut outs in the main body and extends from the back of the tray bulkhead to just in front of the turbine. The only way I could see to add more capacity would be to add a tapered bulge at the back of the tank. You might gain 1/2 a litre.

There is so much room in this jet under the cockpit cover you could put another tank there. I did this on my Reaction to add a 32oz smoke tank and it worked well. Only issue was all of the smoke fluid was ahead of the CG. [&:]

Are you 160 and above turbine users using any other exhaust tube then the stock one? Is it capable of getting rid of all that air?

I have a Scorpion on the way that will be outfitted with a Behotec JB180. After talking to Peter (EICAS) who has flown the same combo for two years, he says that the stock pipe is just fine.

I'm pumpin' heat from a JetCat Titan in mine thru the stock pipe! No probs to date. This is the second season with it.

PualD, thanx for the info. The tank I'm using now is 4 liters. Gary M. of Jet-Tech made it for me last year when I started outfitting this ride. My tank extends flush with the former in front of the landing gear. I can get another 3" easily and plan to call Gary later today to request this custom build. I thought the new tank was about that long. I want to use smoke without losing the capacity I carry now.... give or take a few ounces.

Thanks guys!:-) I put in my Nexus a week ago and have got 6 trips on it since. My god what a fantastic plane!!!:-) It flies just brilliant with this kind of thrust. I have also just today started to use the flaps and air-brake. It's just impressing how effective they are together. The plane just stops in mid air!:-)

Some Q's for you other users.

1) I have mine balanced at around 16cm and it flies well. But I need quite a bit of up-elevator trim fo fly level. Is this normal?

2) I have the stock elevator throw but when using flaps and brake I would like some more up elevator. I'm not able to flare the plane completely like forinstance my Eurosport. But then again - I don't know if it's possible to flare the Scorpion as much as the Euro....? How much up elevator throw are you guys flying with?

Anderhau,

1) Mine has 5-7 mm of up elevator for level flight. I think this is normal and recommended.

2) I also added 15mm up up elevator with full flaps and another 5 mm with full airbrake. I ran into the same problem on the first flights where I did not have the up-elevator mix and ran out of elevator on landing.

The plane likes to land nose-high and needs the elevator up trim. :)

Good luck with the trimming and don't be afraid to play with the mixes as they are sensitive to CG.

AD's CG is very conservative. Mine is balanced as rear as possible such as the front wheel still touches the ground with the fuel tank empty. I have also increased the throws on elevators.

Move the CG back to the struts and turn the elevators up
It only gets better

I have seen that video!:-) I wonder why he has the airbrake out...? Does it help pushing the tail down mabe, or does he just have flaps and airbrake on the same switch?:-) Do you think he has full tank, or just enough to make it back down to make it look spectacular?;-) With the Nexus in place, and a trip to a tarmac strip next weekend, I will try to replica this takeoff...:-)

I think I have the balance right. If I have empty the tank it just marely stays on the noseleg. If I lift it up with the tail touching the ground it will stay there. I guess the next is to increase the up throw on elevator...:-)

That is mine and the air brake gives a good pitch up moment
the rudders are in also, they do the same. you dont need much up elevator with all that stuff hanging out
