Mobil DTE light?
Is this a 2 strokeor machine oil? I'm gonna order some from McMaster Carr but can't figure what part number or the grade of oil to use.
Thanks |

RE: Mobil DTE light?
Joe,
I buy from MSC Industrial since there NE distrubution center is nearby. This is the link and the product P/N. http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/GSDRVS...00000097069736 LUBRICANTS & INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS http://www1.mscdirect.com/images/browse/arrow_rt.gif LUBRICANTS http://www1.mscdirect.com/images/browse/arrow_rt.gif OIL http://www1.mscdirect.com/images/browse/arrow_rt.gif Item #60002300 Been using this instead of turbine oil for a couple of years in both JetCat and Jet Central turbines. Works great. |

Thanks, but I was interested in gallon jugs. I really have the same question as JoelP. Some retailers have DTE labeled as Hydraulic Oil and some as Machine Oil; what's the difference? When I look at McMastert-Carr's web page they list several flavors of DTELight. Which is the one being used for our turbines: DTE24 or DTE, I believe Light is 32 viscosity?

Our usage is the 32. I have one jug that is listed as Bearing & Circulating Oil and another that is listed as Hydraulic Oil. Both have the same part number and have VG32 listed with the part number.

Are JetCat owners using DTE light?

RE: Mobil DTE light?
I have been use DTE Light 32 at 5% dilution most of last season and this season in a P-70, Wren 54SS, AMT NL Pegasus, P-180, Rhino, Titan, and recently, my new Wren 160, now with 35 uneventful runs on my Kingcat. Zero bearing problems with over 250 flights on all these motors combined. None of the motors has been sent in for overhaul, so I have no way of knowing whether coking deposits are a problem, but the fact that all the motors are running fine, I rather doubt it. Another club member has been using it for many flights on his Wren 44 and 54 and RAM 500.
I see where price has gone up a bit. A couple of us got together and bought 6 pails about 1 year ago for $76.00/5gallon pail dropped shipped to one of the guys place of business, so about $3.80/qt. |
RE: Mobil DTE light?
Yea the oil is ISO Grade 32, SAE grade 10 machine oil. McMaster part # for 5 gallon pail is 2158K34 for 98.24, still a bargain compared to turbine oil. Shipping is about $25.00 UPS ground.</p> |
RE: Mobil DTE light?
The only differences I can find on 24 vs Light is in the additives.. 24 has anti shear anti wear additives, such as zinc.... they are made from the same stock base.. 24 is designed to be used as a hydralic oil, and light is a machine oil, but again from the same stock.. so by nature of its design, the Light would foam less, and separate water better... if it were used full strength in a bearing casing
All that said, in a 5% mix to paraffin, my humble opinion is it doesn't really between the two matter if its DTE 24 oil, or DTE Light machine oil.. its the same diluted base stock that "grabs" the bearing surfaces... Only a small percentage of the oil gets to the bearings anyway, so in reality, having good clean Kero is as important as what oil it has.. It appears that people have had good success with 24, with 32, with Light.. Syn turbine motor oil is a complete diff formulation because its designed to move particles and suspend them like motor oil for filtering, and have detergent, and high shear, but it still works fine for us.. again because of the dilution and the good quality base stock.. In a turbine, its about keeping the bearings flushed clean, and not galled from heat.. and to get to the rear, the fuel/oil has to cling to the shaft in most designs to migrate rearward.. fwiw... |
