Black Smoke???

We have a need for a smoke system which is capable of producing black smoke instead of the usual white. Anyone have an idea what we can use (or add to the smoke fluid) to produce a black smoke??
Thanks!
Todd

Todd, try some #2 fuel oil.

We tried that colored full scale additive...Expensive and VERY messy!!!! No thanks & never again... We were running a red dye. Don't know if they make a black..

try some used motor oil in with the smoke fluid but expect a messy pipe.

Afterburner. I'v heard nightmares about that colored smoke dye. Getting on cars other pilots and all kinds of stuff.

The application is for a Drone, not an RC model; but it is turbine powered so our smoke systems would be applicable. No tail pipe to worry about and not really concerned with something a bit "messy", just need a fluid that will produce black smoke. It is a requirement being dictated by the customer, just need a solution that works.

Silly side story.

Back in the early '70s when the Blues were flying the F-4s, they used the two inboard missiles to hold dye'd water they would spray during their shows. That plan only lasted about 1/2 of the season when they realized that the dyed water they were spraying was...well...dyed water. They were spraying the crowd, the parking lots...everything with the spent dye. Finally, they sprayed a group of VIPs (Generals...Admirals ETC) and it ruined their uniforms...because, well...it's dye and would not come out. Thus the program came to an end. Oops!

OK...back to Todd's quest.

Lots of unburned diesel should smoke black. Same with unburned JetA. (think F-4's when not in burner)

Probably best if it's not atomized well from the spray bar(s). I'm guessing a hi flow rate out of a round tube might do it.

I remember reading a thread a while back where Eddie Weeks accidentally fueled his turbine with Diesel instead of Jet-A. I believe he stated that it smoked like an F-4 in flight.

I need the system to operate in the same manner we use our smoke systems with similar efficiency. I simply need an additive (or fluid) that will provide a dense black smoke.

RE: Black Smoke???

If the white smoke is just dispersal of the oil into small droplets due to the high temp.. Or I would imagine that's whats happening since the actual combustion of the oil WOULD leave a black aerosol, or invisible..

Black smoke would require the combustion or at least partial combustion of something. Or using the same mechanism fro above, dispersing a black pigment of some kind. Let me get out some old chemistry books..

Ive tried for years to figure it out and even exchanged emails with a college chemical science professor.

He suggested a few chemicals that could be used, but they would probably kill you

heat+fuel(diesel) no oxygen=white smoke

becouse of no oxygen in turbines gasses we evaporate the diesel and turn it to white smoke.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_triangle

if we burn the diesel maybe we can get black smoke....burn just add the missing oxygen to the triangle. ...extra nozzles that suply fresh air ..

in my hotspot when i get oxygen i get flame but no smoke....maybe it needs more diesel for black smoke

a friends idea not mine ...there is also the stuff used in the boats/ships for rescew signals that make smoke while burns...[8D]

Todd, try some #2 fuel oil.
I have tried, fuel oil and diesel.. nothing goes brown or black yet.. mineral oil goes even whiter.. carbon makes black, so I wonder about thinned motor oil.. havent tried it..

Lately, I have been getting alot of black streaks in my underwear after eating 2 Enchiladas at El Rancheros drive tru on lunch break. (they are only 5 Pesos for 2 Enchiladas) It has also given me alot of excess built up combustion, therefore releasing alot of hot gasses and they are sometimes wet and runny. My point here is: Dont eat Enchiladas at El Rancheros drive tru! You will have one helluva mess! [:@] [:'(]

how big is the drone......or more importantly how much weight can you add to get what you want...
