U2 Spyplane
Does anyone have any info about any kits available of a U2 Spyplane? I know there was one available in the 1980's but I don't know anything more about it. Supposedly it was put out by Knights of the Air...are they still around? I've always been interested in putting one together. Any info GREATLY appreciated about this or any other U2 kit.

U2 Kit
Your information is correct. Knights of the Air did in fact produce a kit for D/F. I was involved in the generation of CAD assembley drawings for this kit. (circa 1985) It was marketed thru Tower Hobbies for a breif period. All tooling etc was sold to a fellow in New Jersey. I will try and gather the name and contact of the current owner info for you if possible. Regards. Kerry J. Sterner (Vampire) |

Thank you so much for the effort. I know its unlikely, but it would be a dream to find one of the kits prebuilt or not. I don't suppose you have one. I'd pay a premium to get ahold of one.

Butch Sycles (SP?) up in Dallas has a mold for a large one. It flies at the SWFF every year.

Hallo Sean
There are two manufacturers of the U2 as a kit in Germany. One is Werner Kranz who recently had an advert in a rc magazine for an all glass 3.2 m U2 for use as a sailplane, impeller or jet turbine. Cost is approx. € 1000 or Dollars ( I think they are still 1:1) The other is in a 2.1 or 2.4 meter version with GFK fuselage and styro/abbachi wings. I don't think that either of these gentlemen have a homepage yet, but I could dig out the tel. numbers or email addresses if you would like them. regards Daniel |

Tam (of tamjets.com) had a U2. Not sure if it was a kit, but I know there were moulds for it, so you could always ask him for details.

Mike do you have any pics of Butch's U-2....what size is it?
Tams is a TR1. The Knights of the Air U-2 is not to big! and would be a bit small for currently available turbines... A larger U-2 would make a great turbine trainer.... |

check with DCM here on RCU. he will know if butch still has the molds or not. If I am not mistaken it was about a 96" long fuse. we might even have a "butch" sighting at the metroplex jets meet over at texas motor speedway in a few weeks.

If Butch's U2 was white, I have a blooper from one of the Southwest Jet shows. It involves his U2 screaming right at me, I wish I had filmed the impact with the pilot box, but I was too busy running to save my worthless hide. :D Broke the nose clean off, but I saw it fly the very next year, real impressive. BIG!

Hi everybody, Butch's molds warped so in the can they went. I have flown a copy from the molds and the model belongs to Paul
Stelly. It has a wingspan of 150" and flies like a baby. If the interest is there I could get the lines cnc cut a fuse plug and make a mold to create some bodies. The wings are hot wired foam with balsa skins. David Hudson www.dcmodelshop.com |

U2 From Werner Kranz
Hello all
Here are the details for The Kranz U2: Span: 3.49 meters (137 inches) Fuselage 2.16 meters (85 inches) All glass Model in 2 versions. U-2A @ € 910 U-2B @ € 970 I am not sure what the difference between the A and B are. Other Jets on his program are: Lockheed SR-71 Vought A-7 Corsair II (1.69 m span) Being 707, 737, 747 Airbus a-300, 310 In November there is a Model Expo in Stuttgart and if Mr Kranz is there with his selection I will dig up this post and give some more details. Werner Kranz Friedrichstrasse 30 44581 Castrop-Rauxel Germany Tel: + 49 2305 81402 or 73459 Regards Daniel |

Could you provide details on the Stuttgart show?
BTW I'm pretty sure Werner Krantz does not speak English so you might have to find a German speaker before you call. Mike |
U2/TR1
DCM: I too would love to see a large scale kit. I've got a 104" TR1 under construction-for years- and it really is too small for many 'goodies'. I could barely build the fuse around a 5" fan. Always thought it would make a great jet trainer. I was at Patrick AFB (E. Coast of Fla.) years ago and used to watch them do touch and goes in the evening. In my mind at least, got to be one of the sexiest aircraft flying.

U2 info
Hi Daniel, please send me any info you have and further Werner Kranz U2 details when available....
I have also seen his awesome A7 Corsair, and emailed him about 12 months ago re further info. Mike is right Mr Kranz does not appear to be very fluent in English and it was hard to get any details via e-mail on the A7. If anyone can help shed some more light on the Werner Kranz kits, info, specs and availability. It would be appreciated, I am very interested in the U2 and A7.... Cheers- |

Talk to Jason Somes I think he could get access to the molds from the U2 he flew in "Thirteen Days"
It was a big one |

Hello Ozcan
I will call Mr Kranz tomorrow and see what information I can get from him. Possibly he has a brochure or info that he can send me by mail, which I will then Scan or mail on to who ever wants it. There are also one or two active German forums in which I could ask for Information about these two aircraft. I will post another message once I have spoken to Mr Kranz. regards Daniel |
more U2
Matt, do you have any more info on Jasons U2? pics, specs? also maybe Jasons email address...

He is on here somewhere?!? You there Jason? If you are bored round up a few guys off this list and lets pull some fuses, I need the practice!! (not kidding) |
U2 Spyplane
Hi!
Werner Krantz produces the U-2 in two different scales I think. One was constructed for D/F-use and can be powered by RAM500 or simmilar. And it flies like a sailplane. David |
Info on German Forums
Daniel.
Do you have the web addresses to the two german forums you mentioned earlier? Thanks, |

Ozcan wrote:
"Thats the first R/C Hustler I have ever seen... any info on that one!!! another beauty." Marty, since no one chimed in on the Hustler, I thought I would... Butch Sickles also built the Hustler following the demise of a smaller version which was powered by 4/.46 sized ducted fans. The earlier one was the product of Butch and Lynn McCaully and was at least 8-10 years old when it died a spectacular death a week before the Southwest Fan Fly a few years ago. At the time it hadn't been flown for several years and Lynn wanted to test it before taking it to the SWFF, and it succombed to a faulty receiver switch. The version you saw in the picture has not flown, to my knowlege. The last I heard, it was waiting on someone to donate 4 turbines. Think TJT might be interested? :D Johnny |
Still the U2
I have just had a word with Mr Kranz who was not able to give me any more detail on the U2 other than that it is absolutely true to scale, all glass and the dimensions as given earlier, He cannot speak any English and does not have any brochures etc.
He is not going to the Expo in Stuttgart either (too busy). It must be a good product if he does not have to advertise, has no internet site and is not going to the expo, good models seem to sell themselves. I will put a note in the German forum and see what happens. regards Daniel |
Not U2?
Johnny, re-Hustler x4 turbines.... Not to sure about TJT donating engines : )
The Hustler may be more easy on the wallet if consideration is given to a twin turbine set-up! with the two outer nacelles as dummies? Although 4xMW54's would be pretty special... Daniel- do you have Mr Kranz's email address? I may see if I can contact him about these U2 kits... |
U2 Spyplane
I saw in RCJI a year or so ago someone in the UK was acting as a go between. He would drive to Werner's place and bring them to the UK for shipping. I think it was the issue with the A-7 kit review. Anyone remember who?
I'd really like to get a 707 kit and make an E-3 AWACS from it. |
U2 Spyplane
Hi.
Ther is an english firm that has Kranz moulds of the A7... I try to find an advertise of this firm in my RCJI collection. Julian |
U2 Spyplane
Hi again.
CenturyJets bought the production rights of the A7(written in one of the last issues of RCJI;they made a review of this model)). [email protected] should be the right way to get in contact with them... HP: www.centuryjet.com Julian :) |

I would be very interested in getting my hands on a fuse. I had a Knights of the Air kit and wasn't very impressed with the quality of the kit. After many hours of fixing the kit I was able to fly it with some success.
There is an American company that is getting ready to produce a kit at http://www.jensenjetmodels.com/id28.htm They don't have an introduction date yet. Please keep us posted on progress of getting a fuse. Thanks! Jimmy |

Sorry for the delayed reply! I've actually been trying to work this week.
The airplane I flew for the movie had a 14' span and was JetCat P-120 powered. The airplane flew Awesome right until they blew it up!!! The owner of the molds is local and may have interst in selling them if enough of you guys are interested. The molds are fuse only with conventional wings and stabs. No scale provisions for landing gear were made, so it will take some work. I'd love to see Matt covered in resin!! Jason Somes JetCat USA D.F.U. |

Jason, any chance you could post some pics here of your 14' span U2, as I did not catch the movie yet.... sounds like an awesome model.

Hi guys, I'm new to RCU but here's a picture of the U2 built from the Butch Sickels kit. Despite it being too heavy at 30 lbs it flies pretty well, David Hudson even lets me fly it!

Marty,
You can reach Butch at: [email protected] The original molds are gone but another RCU poster, David Hudson is considering making another mold for this airplane. Do a search for DCU for Dave. It really is a nice flying model and I hope to put a turbine in it eventually. It has flaps, retracts (the pogos drop off on retraction), and fuse mounted speed brakes (what was I thinking?) Paul |
