Dragon question
 

Question for you guys that built Extreme Jets Dragons. I am assembling one, recent production, and I milled a slot in the rudder for the control horn. It is near the bottom of the rudder as I see them in all the pictures of Dragons on RCU. The problem is that there is no wood inside the rudder at that point. I don't believe that it is a good idea to glue the horn into a hollow area of the rudder.

Has anyone else encountered such a problem? If so, what did you do?

A friend of mine lost one when the rudder horn severed from the rudder during a climbing knife edge, so I think your concern is warranted.

I also saw the incident Edgar mentioned above, I would suggest that you make an opening on the bottom of the rudder near the leading edge and insert and glue with Hysol a block of hardwood shaped to fit the inside of the rudder flush with the outer skin and flush with the bottom of the rudder, and wide/long enough to have enough meat for the horn to grab to, also use a carbon or G-10 horn, not a FRP horn which is what our friend had when his failed, I have encountered that same problem as you with models in the past, this solution has worked perfectly

Ruizmilton, what is FRP? Is that what came with the Dragon kit? If so, are you saying that the horns that came with it are inadequate?

Jetsflying, I assume that you have a block of wood in the bottom of the rudder otherwise your setup would crush the rudder when you tighten it, right?

Meesh, you and the boys should consider making it down for a "warmup" during the summer. I got 5 R54 flights last Saturday. Albert got a bunch of flights on his new Eurosport. The field is in top notch shape, even though the winter was pretty harsh.

I'm not sure what horns were provided with the kit, but our friend's rudder horn was FRP, could you post a pic of yours?

I think I have the FRP horns. Dreamworks has the exact horn by Airpower. Here is the link:

These horns should work if I install them properly. I already put in a piece of maple with hysoled it into the bottom of the rudder. I pre-milled the maple so I glued the horn in at the same time. It is downstairs drying as we speak!

Yep, that's what our friend had, his broke at the base, if you glued it already, well, you should be OK as long as you do manouvers that are not too aggresive on the rudder, yet, if you like to fly a lot of knife edge, I recommend that do not fly until you replace those with the airpower carbon fiber horns, dreamworks has them, I believe they are $9.00 for a set of four. Based on our friend's Dragon incident, those FRP horns are not strong enough to withstand the force needed to keep the Dragon on knife edge...

Hey Meesh, it's only a 5 hour drive! But it is worth it to party with us at Farview!

Jetsflying, so much for manufacturing consistancy. When I cut the bottom of the rudder open last night there was no wood for at least an inch and a half. I sure hope some poor guy doesn't try to glue a horn in just to the fiberglass! No wood plus terrible instructions is a recipe for disaster!

Hi everyone!

I recieved my brand new Dragon last week. Awesome quality. A very good ARF-Kit.

My question: I am missing the servo holes for the elevator and rudder servos. Is this normal or simply forgotten by factory??

Dirk,

My Dragon had a small hole cut in the bottom of the rudder. I had to enlarge it to get the servo into the rudder. The servo mounting plate is at an angle so I would enlarge the hole a little at a time until you know where to make the main cuts. It will become apparant as you go. I didn't get to my elevators yet but I am sure that it is the same type of deal.

I have no idea about the CG. I am not even close to finishing the Dragon. There are some other threads here on RCU that mention it. I think that Anton actually posted a picture showing the control throws and CG.
