I saw somewhere mention of using a wood compressor wheel in rc turbines. am i crazy or does someone have information?

Actually Kurt Shreckling(sp?) designed the FD3-64 which used a wood compressor wheel. There is a book that is available that shows you how to build one of his turbines. Also, the FD3-64 was the basis of the original Golden West turbine that was on the market several years back.

Yes thats wright, the first running rc turbine in the past had a compresser wheel made of wood.

If I remember rightly, it has been mentioned in either Thomas Kamps book or Kurt Schrekling's (SP?) book on Miniature Turbine engines and building your own
If I could find my copies of these I'd scan the pages and attach these here but they're buried somewhere in packing boxes.

I think it used 2 flat disks (One with a hole in it to let the air in). Sandwiched in between are curved vanes.

My pal and I actually had one. It was periphally wound with carbon fiber tows around the hub It was actually run a few times but in those days the r.p.m. was much lower. If my memory serves me correctly the max' revs was about 67k. Kurt ran his prototype frequently in the 90s and spurned all the development that now provides us with our modern turbines. Ron

I want to build a mini for just bench running and if it would work the wooden compressor wheel would make life alot easier on me. So the hub is wooden with carbon blades? what kinda wood?

Edgeflyer, The junkyard is full of them. Go get a turbo unit off of a Honda and take the compressor out of it. It will do more than anything you could construct out of wood and hold up longer as well. The last one I made out of wood years ago back in the GTBA days I made out of walnut. The first hot start and shutdown I had the nicest little hotdog cooker you would ever see. Now, thats not to say you couldn't get mighty crafty with a mill, a block of wood and a dividing head. but make it easy on yourself.

Yep...... Been there done that!!!!!!!
Much better using a car/truck turbo charger compressor.

Superb workmanship, looks to good to use.

The model turbine has come along way since those early days,I believe one could usea "Camping Gaz" cylinder as an outer turbine case too.

I was wanting to do something real small like 35MM or so. just to bench run. I am building a KJ66 also right now.

I believe the turbo from the Mercedes/Smart car has a very small compressor wheel and has been used previously. Ron

yes tahts what Lambert uses in the early kolibri engines.
Its 33 mm and its from a kp31 borgwarner turbo charger.

I built a turbojet engine out of a garrett turbocharger once. It was quite the learning experience to say the least. The compressor wheels in the small turbos were used in the early turbojet engines for a while. The last time I ran this engine was on straight propane pressure out of the tank without the regulator. RPM was much higher than in the video below.
