Dyed my wheels is it ugly?
Alright, I just finished dying my wheels, (yes it's 1:30am here) was going to originally go straight to black but decided to try and match my body, well it didn't work. Does it look really bad? should I go darker grey? or straight to black? Let it be?

No, I'm just kidding, they look fine. Although dying them black would look more menacing. I think you'll have a hard time trying to match the silver on your body by dying your rims.

yeah, I had it raised up because I was at this construction site jumping these dirt 10ft.mounds, most fun I've had bashing yet. I highly recommend construction sites for bashing. Here's where I got the wheels, $16/pair and they have yellow too.

I'll have to think about the wheels some more before I glue em. I like the grey because it's different, and it does look cool, just not with that body.

Well, I got em because they were the cheapest 40 series wheel out. And I'm guessing they must be lighter. Just like with the buggies and touring cars, most people use the flat dish type wheel. I don't see anyone with chrome mags or anything flashy. Must be some reason.
I got the white so that I could dye them what I wanted. There is yellow too.

What is the purpose of the velocity wheels?
What is the purpose of the velocity wheels?
The first is aerodynamics (yes, spokes cutting through the air robs power).
The second is durability (there are no corners or edges to develop stress cracks).
The third (and most important to me) is they do not load up with dirt and mud as much as open designs. The more dirt and debris, the greater the weight (robs power) and less balanced the tire (tire shimmy which greatly impacts handling).

RE: Dyed my wheels is it ugly?
Here's the reference I used to do it. http://www.dirtyrc.com/dirty_hop_ups...ying_parts.htm
I used RIT powdered die, worked just as good, plus I got it from my grocery story in the utility section, saved me a trip to Joann fabrics. Just go light at first, or shorten the dip times, you can always go darker. I put mine back in the pot right now, trying to get em darker, I'll post picks in a few. I plan on doing the stock Maxx ones next, I've heard you can strip em with oven cleaner.

Ok, I put em back in the pot and well, I kinda forgot about them for 90 minutes. They're almost black now. GVFD29 will like this, actually they're kinda purple. After doing my first dye job I learned a couple things,
-you don't need to submerge the entire wheel
-I went out and bought a pot so not to damage my girlfriends pot, well it did nothing to the metal pot. dye was in it for over 2 hours(gonna boil some spaghetti now) I'm guessing it won't do anything to any pot, just don't let your moms see ya doin it.
-I didn't need the string, the Velocity 40 wheels floated right on top(test your wheels in water to see if they float upright)
-Clothing dye isn't like indian ink, or computer ink. You can wipe it off a counter or stovetop without staining. A few drops aren't very dark or concentrated. I laid out paper and towels and napkins. It was overkill.
-Read the directions entirely on the die yourself!! My girlfriend told me the entire package was for 2 cups of water. I said "No way dude!, that's not enough even for fabric!" This was after I already dumped the package into about a gallon of water. So I took the package and read it. You're supposed to melt the powder in 2 cups of water, then dump it into 3 GALLONS! oye.

Do you think dye would work out better than spray paint, I have those wheels and want to color them red.
Dye or paint?
Oh, and the wheels look sharp

Dye is the only way to go. It won't flake, peel, or crack. When you dye, the color "sinks" in a little. This means minor scratches and nicks aren't as visible.

I've tried to paint before, it flaked off everytime, even tried magic marker it didn't coat as even. If your wheels are used clean them very good or you may get some darker/lighter blotchy areas. Denatured alcohol is always good. I'm looking at those wheels I did right now, I think I liked em better light grey LOL May end up blacking em out when I need new rubber.

RE: Dyed my wheels is it ugly?
so the length of time they are in the H20 will change the darkness of the color? does the water have to be hot, warm or cold?...I'm planning on dyeing my stock wheels (titan) orange.
by the way, i think you should dye them white...
j/k...i think they look good now that they're darker...a little too dark though...but they look good.

RE: Dyed my wheels is it ugly?
yes, the length definitely affects the darkness, and so does the amount of die and water. And I have noticed the wheels do seem to color faster if the water is hot, the wheels are tough, I nearly boiled them and nothing happened to them. I did leave them for too long, mainly because I was browsing the forums and forgot about them[:@] Just go light first and keep checking em. And do them all at the same time so the color is even. At least 2 at a time if they're too big. I also saved the die in a plastic gallon juice jug, lucky I did because the next day I did decide I wanted them darker. It's all trial and error, pretty easy though. Post some pics when you do it. Before and after is always cool.

RE: Dyed my wheels is it ugly?
I just got done dying mine red. They turned out pretty good. It's a nice deep blood kinda red. They were in for about 10 min. I used almost a whole bottle of RIT scarlet is the color. I had to fix up the image a bit so it is closer to what it actualy looks like. I only have a digital camera on my phone and res. is not so great.

RE: Dyed my wheels is it ugly?
I did the stock wheels on my MGT with the scarlet red about three weeks ago and also did the chrome bumpers because the chrome was flaking off, they came out really great and they look good with the MGT red body wish I had digital camera would really like to show how they look[].Doing a dye job on the wheels really works well and makes the truck look great.
