Well i'm installing the engine on my Savage SS, and it shows a picture of how to mesh the gears, and it shows, too loose, too tight, and ok! but its really hard to see how the gears are meshing... any ideas?

take a peice of paper and put it inbetween the gears. and slowly push the gears together (with the paper between the gears) and when the strip of paper starts to wrinkle, the gear mesh is good.

once installed try holding the cb firmly and try turning spur ..without moving the cb there should be a little play ...which is desirable..if theres no play at all its too tight and if theres too much like u can turn the spur all the way with the cb on hold..then its too loose

Use a strip of ordinary notebook paper long enough to be pulled through a complete rotation of the clutchbell. Push everything together and tighten it all down, then pull the paper out. If it tears you are too tight, it if comes out clean with a little marking on it you are too loose. If it comes out pleated you are just right. After you get it right with the paper, jam the clutchbell with a finger so it can't move and rock the spur so you will know what proper mesh feels like.
