Default Thinking of going Nitro

Ok guys I currently have an HPI Wheely King along with a Traxxas E-Maxx. I attended my first R/C Monster Truck jam this past weekend and am seriously thinking about purchasing a nitro Monster truck. Any one have any input on the Savage X vs. the Revo?? I know very little about nitro, I do know the Savage is a big block. I am looking for a excelelnt all round basher, but would like to occasionally race other monster trucks too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was really pumped to see all those trucks this weekend, just love that sound and that smell!!!!!!!!!

alot of bashing and occansionaly racing? Very tough choice. aftershock, mgt, lst2 or revo. If you have a tight budget than the mgt or aftershock is for you. If you dont definitly look into the lst2 or revo. Hope this helps.

Id say savage is strictly bashing, ive seen one on a track, it is a TANK bulletproof but takes a whole football field to turn around. The revo is strong i have one, its speed is good too, as long as you get the 3.3 you shouldnt have any engine problems. The 2.5 is a powerfule engine for its size but doent last that long. The 3.3 wont have those problems. Hope that helps, oh and the savage x is slow but the savage x 4.6ss is pretty fast. If you want the best of both worlds, fast and strong id go with iether a lst2 or an aftershock. Bigblock power, and monster truck toughness, revo speed.

Thanks for all the quick replies guys, I am looking for something along the lines of the Savage 4.6 or the Revo 3.3. Which would be better for a novice like myself straight outta the box and maybe some up-grades later on?? One again thaks for all your input! I know everyone says this but just looking for that good balance between power and speed.

i would say the revo sense its more directed to user friendly than the savage. With the Ez start and awsome aftermarket support. And will teach you how to tune.

I agree, it is a easy truck to run cause it hardly breaks its fast and easy to tune.

I say go for a HPI Savage. Yeah, it may seem a bit more complicated than the compeditors, but once you get to know how everything is set up, it will be a walk in the park... or should I say RACE! I've had great luck with my Savage and stand behind HPI 100%. My freind was a die-hard Traxxas guy until he decided to run the T-Maxx for a change. He hit a curb at practicly coasting speeds and totaled the entire truck. After fixing the entire front end of the truck, we ran a few tanks outside, maybe one pass and the trans went out! I think the problem is that Traxxas makes everything out of cheap plastic including the transmission and drive shafts. Today he has a Savage 25 and has been converted over to HPI. As for the T-maxx, it is in the corner of the workshop waiting to be put out of it's misery! Bottom line is that the Savage is built to take the beatings and last a long time, not shatter on impact.[sm=regular_smile.gif]

if you have no spending limit get a revo...youll have to do some work to make it 100% race ready, but after you do that youll be competitive

If you can afford it, LST2, cuz it's the best nitro MT there is.. If not, Savage..

No experience with the Revo, but having spent as much time in Savage forums as I have, well, that ain't gonna happen..

i'm agreeing with hpidrifter, not for exactly the same reasons however, the LST2 is for me the best because it comes with a good engine and radio, it is fairly easy to work on, but stock it isn't the fastest, best handling or the strongest, and all three things can be fixed with a set of truggy wheels and tires and +2 pinions, the stock wheels such the life out of the LST2.

Thanks again for all the excellent input, I have been a big fan of Traxxas, just wish the Revo came with a big block ready to run like the Savage 4.6ss, not really that familar with the LST2. If you guys had to pick one of the above between the Revo and the Savage for a newbie to nitro, who is looking for the most bang for the buck which would you choose??? Would it be that hard to change the Revo over to big block? How would it effect the drive train, ect. with the bigger engine??? I like the fact that the Savage has the big block already and have heard its one tuff mother, but then again so is my E-Maxx. I just want that nitro power along with that awesome sound.

I have both the revo 3.3 extended chasis model and the older savage x. I got the savage x first and loved it with the axial .32 in it. It screamed with the bigger motor in it; however, it had a lot of issues after I upgraded the motor. The brakes did not want to stop that heavy truck and everything I tried to improve the breaking did not seem to last that long till they gave out again. The front steering was another problem I constantly had. The savage x would have trouble steering after a few gallons through it, but I fixed it with upgrades. Another problem was roll overs and lack of protection and motor mount strength. The plastic roll bar the savage came with was worthless when doing big jumps and having hard lands and roll overs; the motor would take the impact and break the bottom motor plate very easily with the larger big block in the savage. I did not like the idea of philips screws used through out the truck and much needed lock tight on some of those that would come loose. After owning the savage for over a year I decided to get a revo 3.3. The revo has its issues too but as for performance its night and day compared to the savage x. Performance wise, the revo handles much better in the turns and absorbs the bumps better and lands jumps out of the box much better. The revos suspension is much more tuneable out of the box and the truck is lighter. For speed, the revo comes in close to a modified big block savage; however, the revo has the edge over all due to its lighter weight and lighter rotating mass in its drive train. I took out the axial .32 and tried it in the revo just to see how it ran with a big block. Wheelies on damand, handled almost the same as with the 3.3, very impressive difference performance wise especially on acceleration. Problems I had with the revo was the rear exhuast manifold breaking, reverse mico servo fails if not set up correctly, throttle servo return spring/carb angle needs to be set up perfect or it eats throttle servos. I managed to fix all these issues and enjoy the revo much better after all the weaknesses are fixed. In the end, its your choice which truck you decide to get both are great, my savage just sits collecting dust while my revo gets all the bashing. I understand HPI has addressed some of the issues I encontered on the older savages. So if you decide to get the new savage 4.6 hopefully you will not have the same issues I had with my older version.

LST2, savage, MGT, revo. In that order.
