I will run those types of tires "backwards" when running my Revo through soft snow, but that's from experimentation that I decided to run them that way. For nowmal running through mud and grass and all, I run them the "normal" way. It's a matter of handling. When in the snow, I have no problem sacrificing speed for not getting stuck. When going higher speeds, I want stability more than all out traction.

I have heard of people that crawl turning them around as your friends suggest. I think they said it gives a little better traction. Don't know. For anything outside of that though I would run them the normal way forward and if I were to crawl I think I would search about it a bit before i glued them down.

in 1:1 vehicles you always run any tire like in post 3 (so that the part of the tread closest to the center of the tire hits the ground first), so that any water will be channeled out toward the outside of the tire... if you ran them backward you would hydroplane MUCH easier.... In RC's its not that important except that you look like a retard when you put your tires on backward....

though whole idea of running your tires facing forward (stock configuration) is that it will push any mud/snow... biuld up away from the center of the tires.
EDIT: oops just realized dacaur beat me too it
