Not really sure what you mean by 'finer', but the 30wt is less thick than the 40wt. The higher the weight, the thicker the oil. Thicker oil will make the shocks less prone to bottoming out, at the expense of suspenstion speed. If you plan on bashing and jumping a lot, a heavier oil would be better. Light oils will allow the shock to move faster, and is more suited to racing and conditions where you aren't jumping too high. Hope that helps.
