If you're going from AM to FM, then no.
I recently bought a new radio, here are the ones i was looking at:
Hitek SRX or CRX
Futaba 3PM
Airtronics MX3
JR XS3 (Synth version of the XR3)
These are all nice FM computer radios with similar features. The Futaba is probably the most programmable. They all have a synthesized version or upgrade(no need for crystals) for more money.
Any one of these should be a great upgrade for your evader.
Personally i got the JR XS3 so i could forget about crystals. It's a nice radio and i'm quite happy with it.

Here's my question. If i get a new radio.. say an FM.. with synthetic programming OR one that is the same channel as my stock receiver.. will it work? Can i get.. say a Hi-Tec radio that broadcasts on channel 64 and have it work on my evader with its stock receiver that receives on channel 64? Or do they both have to be the same brand?

Yoster:
No, an FM radio won't work with the evader's stock AM receiver.
doogie494:
I think the stock evader crystals may work. They are futaba 75Mhz AM crystals, so they should work in any futaba 75Mhz AM radio.
Unless you're really tight on money, get an FM radio. There's a lot less glitching and interference. The Hitek SRX and Airtronics MX-3 can be had for about $100 from tower. The Futaba 3PM (which i would say is the best of the non-synth bunch) runs around $120. Why cheat yourself? Wait a little longer and save the extra dough. Heck i got my NIB fully synth JR XS3 off ebay for $145.
