what are the duratrax maximum ST like?
i have the chance to purchase one of these in visible near new condition for 80USD shipped to australia. it needs a body, body posts and one screw for the pullstarter plus the usual stuff to get it going. i was just wondering if these trucks are a good beginner model and is it worth the 100aud.
cheers, ned

RE: what are the duratrax maximum ST like?
The Maximum MT was my first truck. I converted it to a ST & still play with it on & off road.
It will not take a hard bashing. But because its suspension is so adujstable, it makes a great
nitro racer for my son. Replacement parts are dirt cheap too.
Most recently, I put in an OS max 15cvrx. Whoa does she fly..
Truck is very easy to work on too.
What I dont like about it:
No radio box. Rx & batts. are wide open & up front.
Too many screws in the pan.
Rear end is not the strongest. No hard bashing.
Freaking small gas tank.
No choice in spur gears.
I paid $140 US for mine off of Ebay with a broken pullstart.
Do you have any pics?

The tank is too small for MY likings only because it is tough to fill.
Gotta pop the body off.[&o]
My Max is sweet on the smaller technical tracks.
Would not dare take her on some of the bigger tracks with the 4" & 5' jumps.
When the pan gets bent, the gears no longer like to mesh properly.
I am on my 2nd pan now...
From the pics, it looks like a ST Pro. I would jump on it.

It is a pro. It has the alum hubs and carriers and the alum radioplate, 2 speed tranny and the torq .16.
Its a very good truck, if your new to Nitro. BUT if you add more power it runs into alot of problems. With the os .18 I destroyed the diff(replaced with steel) I also stripped spurs like everyday. The external 2 speed cant handle the power because there is no slipper. So when it shifts to second it just eats 2nd gear. I also bent ALOT of hinge pins in the arms(switched to aluminum a-arms problem fixed). So its cheap enough to buy and bash and when your ready for more speed or bling dont buy it for that!! Sell it and get a newer model.
The max st pro is also very easy to work on and is a good learning truck.
Heres my old max st pro. I bought for $200(brand new 1 year or so ago) and put about $300 into it and sold it a couple months later for $200[]
It was pretty decked out but still couldnt handle the OS .18. but was faster than my Jato it just couldnt handle as well.

By steel diff do you mean the internal gears? The diff housing is still plastic right? And there are external 2 speed STEEL gears available, they just cost a bit.

The tranny on the Max is quite simple & easy to adjust.
The only time that I have seen any excessive wear on the spur gears
is when the engine was not properly lined up with the gears.
It is wise to keep a few 52T & 48T spur gears in yer tool box.
As well as lots of 5x10 bearings.
After I installed my OS 15cvrx, I melted the gear box. Precision bearings
& a steel idler gear took care of that problem.
I like my Torq 16s as well. Since I bought the truck, Ive picked up 3 xtra
engines & a case. I do believe that Force made the Torq series for them.
nedmx, have you been to the Duratrax site yet?
They still have great support for the truck to include all literature.

RE: what are the duratrax maximum ST like?
yea, i checked out the site. hmmm, im extremely unsure if i will buy this or not. i keep hearing mixed things about these trucks, some people say they are junk and pretty much fall to peices when you look at em and others have not had a problem and bashed on them pretty hard.
i think for the money i cant go wrong as i could definately sell it for a lot more. i highly doubt i will upgrade the motor so i wont shant be worried about what some extra power will do. with the stock engine do they have transmission problems, and is the 2 speed upgrade worth getting.
also, can i put normal ST tires on as the ones it come with look mighty large.

For the price you are getting you cant go wrong. If you dont buy it give me the guys address and I will :P
The tranny is fairly tough with the stock engine, you may need to replace the diff gears eventually (like any other bevel gear diff), and as tricksligger said the 2 speed is already on it. You can put pretty much any 2.2 truck wheel/tire combo you want on it as long as it uses a 12mm hex mount.

One other thing sligger, did you ever replace the stock screw hinge pins with some actual e-clip types? I cant stand those weak crappy screw pins, but havent seen any normal ones that might be the right size.

After bending like 5 of them(yet never braking an aarm) I put on aluminum a-arms because they had e-cliped hinges. Never had a problem again. I upgraded everything to make it handle the OS.18 without breaking then it just...keepin the front wheels on the ground(even with a front mounted battery pack) and watching the blur go by. The .18 and the 2 speed with big tires was a lethal combo.

That picture is too small, I can barely see it.LOL. Looks good man, barely looks like a max pro. I see you did the same thing I did. Took the black off the stock pipe. What a pain that was.

I notice that the aluminum arms come with outer hinge pins but nothing for the inside (longer ones).. maybe they changed them since you got them.

Yea I thought you meant the outer ones. I never bent the inside ones. Always the shorter ones.
